Reflection and Selected Internship Activity

Most of the content and skills covered in the course were centered on resource and fiscal management. Inequalities in education funding have a significant impact on student outcomes. The idea that resonated with me is student achievement gaps. Statistical reports and school report cards indicate that a significant number of students score below proficiency in state assessments (Barshay, 2018). There is a need to close the student achievement gap. This can be achieved by increasing our support for low-achieving students. Educators ought to identify areas that need improvement or the weaknesses that a student has and provide the help required in order to provide additional support. After reviewing state data and school scores available at the Northwest Evaluation Association (NWEA), I have realized that there is a need to provide our students with additional support in order to close the achievement gap.

A student who scores below proficiency ought to be tutored for at least 30 minutes after schools. Teachers are required to develop strategies to engage students in the classroom. The internship activity aligns with the School’s Improvement Plan. This is because the internship activity provides the school the opportunity to support low-achieving students by helping them in areas or subjects they need additional help. Good tutors tend to build strong, personal relationships with their students and can significantly help low-achieving students improve their performance in school (Linden, 2013). Designing and implementing this activity will improve students' scores. This is because it will provide students with the additional help required to enhance their performance. More to this is that it will help the students learn how to become independent learners. By implementing this activity, I would be able to learn new skills, which will make me a more effective leader. It is vital for me to set clear goals and follow them. As a leader, I want to inspire other leaders and institutions to foster change and innovation that are aimed at improving our schools as well as the performance of our students.

Activity Objectives

The objective of the internship activity include:

Evaluate state data and schools' NWEA scores in order to identify low-achieving students.

Create flyers or permission slips for tutoring after school and Saturday.

Collect information needed for sending out flyers or forms for students to attend tutoring.

Evaluate the strategies that can be used to get parents involved and get students to attend Saturday tutoring.

Evaluate if it would be effective to provide tutoring services to students with Learning Disability.

Real-World Application

As a leader, my role would be to get students to attend tutoring in order to boost their academic performance. I will also be responsible for analyzing data, tracking student's performance records, creating flyers, distributing flyers, engaging parents, and encouraging employees or school staff to get students to attend tutoring.

Objective Timeline

Activity

Activity Breakdown

Time Estimate

Data Tracking

Track and print out NWEA data

Identify the students at the lower end of the performance scale –the lowest 25% in proficiency

2 to 3 hours

Assembly of Information

Assemble information required for sending out fliers or forms

Gather information of parents whose children are in the tutoring program

3 to 4 hours

Contacting Parents

Call parents and tell them about the tutoring program

Ask the parent to share their concerns and opinions about the tutoring program and then address the concerns

Provide the parents with the mastery skills that the students need to work on and improve

3 to 4 hours

During the internship, I will keep a record of the various activities and the outcomes in a notebook. I will note down vital information gathered from students, administration, and parents during the internship period. In the notebook, the data of each entry plus hours worked will be recorded. I will focus on my goals, ideas, and understanding of changes when undertaking my internship program.

Method of Evaluation

I will evaluate my performance based on the data or information gathered to assess and determine the students in need of extra support in order to close the achievement gap at the school. More to this is that I will evaluate how effective I was in completing all the tasks involved, or I was assigned during the internship. I will also evaluate how effective I was in helping parents understanding the benefits of the tutoring program. This will help me evaluate my communication skills. I will know I have achieved what I set out to accomplish if more students than normal attend tutoring.

Final Reflection

This process of creating an internship program has helped me become aware of the expectations I will be required to meet. It has also helped me realize the importance of analyzing data to help determine areas that need improvements in schools. As a leader, it is vital to know areas that need improvement in schools. More to this is that it is crucial to know where to pull data from in order to help improve the overall performance of a school. Most importantly, I have learned how to create an internship proposal.

If I were to coach or mentor an intern, I would emphasize the importance of outlining goals and involving other people in any activity. This is because people such as the administration team, teachers, and colleagues are valuable assets and reliable sources of help. Good leaders try to cooperate with others and ask for help when needed. Being a leader is more than just setting rules and expectations. My educational leadership program has changed my perspective. My new perspective includes making decisions, initiating changes, and innovations to help institutions improve the performance of their students.
