Answers and Reflections

Individual Education Plan (IEP)

Question A1: What is an Individual Education Plan (IEP) and why is it necessary?

Answer A1: An Individual Education Plan (IEP), which is also referred to as an Individual Learning Plan (ILP), is a document that helps plan, teach, monitor and evaluate a student’s education progress. The plan is prepared for students who experience challenges in achieving their potential or those who have a specific need to meet in certain areas of learning. The plan sets out to solve the student’s challenges by a modified curriculum, specifically designed for the student, providing the student with extra resources or setting the student up in a different learning environment from the rest of their peers.

Question A2: How is an Individual Education Plan (IEP) used?

Answer A2: The plan can be used for students separated from the class for additional support through one-on-one lessons and those who require extra help while attending the same lessons with their peers.

Question A3: Who prepares the Individual Education Plan (IEP)?

Answer A2: The plan is written by teachers who collaborate with other education experts. Since the program is unique to the student, the student and his/her parent must be involved, and their contribution should help address the different aspects of the child’s education that ought to be prioritized.

Question A4: What processes are involved in the preparation of the Individual Education Plan (IEP)?

Answer A4: The preparation involves various stages. It starts with identifying the child’s needs, followed by a discussion of the alterations and improvements necessary to adjust the curriculum for the child. The team involved, then prepares the plan, evaluates it, and starts implementing it.

Question 5: How is the implementation process of an Individual Education Plan (IEP) conducted?

The implementation is then assessed regularly to ensure the plan is attaining the set targets. If the need arises, the targets can be modified following evaluation. The final IEP document usually specifies the activities involved in the programs, the different parties that will be involved, and the roles they will play.

Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP)

Question B1: What is a behavior intervention plan (BIP), and what is I purpose?

Answer B1: A behavior intervention plan (BIP) is a written plan designed to teach and reward virtuous behavior. The pan can be a single page document to a document of several pages. The document is intended to prevent or stop misdemeanor rather than punish an ill-behaved child.

Question B2: What are the functions of the different areas of a behavior intervention plan (BIP)?

Answer B2: The document has three primary areas. The first areas enumerate the behavioral problems of the child. The second part of the document describes the root of the negative behavior, while the third part of the document stipulates the initiatives and strategies the are put in place to support or lead the behavioral change.

Question B2: Who prepares a behavior intervention plan (BIP), and what steps are involved in its preparation?

Answer B3: The document is usually prepared by a team put in place by the school to intervene in negative behavior. The team first interviews the affected child, the teachers and other staff at the school. The team may also interview other children and the child’s parents and siblings. The process is known as a functional behavior assessment. The investigations define the student’s negative behavior and the source of the behaviors, and the findings are used to design the intervention plan. The strategies incorporate into the intervention plan are referred to as interventions.

Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA)

Question C1: What is a Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA)?

Answer C1: A Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA) is an assessment conducted to determine why a student is behaving in a certain way. Various approaches and analytical tools are used to understand the challenges experienced by the child.

Question C2: Is a Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA) an accurate tool, what make it reliable?

Answer C2: The primary principle behind FBA is that the behaviors exhibited by a student serve a purpose. Children act in a certain way for specific reasons, and if teachers and parents can understand the reason for the behaviors, they can develop approaches to change it.

Question C3: Who conducted the Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA) and what steps are involved?

Answer C3: The performance of FBA is done by a school team led by a behavior specialist or school psychologist. The process involves four steps. First is defining the behavior, gathering and analyzing information, establish the reason behind the behavior, and last, make a plan to address the behavior. The resulting plan is the behavior intervention plan (BIP).
