We are gathered here today to celebrate the life of Mr. Smith, who has really written an unassailable legacy all his life on earth. We all have had an opportunity of interacting with Mr. Smith either as family, friends, business partner or workmate. I am quite sure no one here would miss a glowing word with which to describe our departing loved one, Mr. Smith. I start by noting some of the tremendous accomplishments that Mr. Smith has made all through his life in the world.

Mr. Smith started the local primary and secondary schools, which now use the name Smith Academy. He oversaw the development of these two schools through thick and thin until they became renowned centers of excellence in this region. To him, education was a fundamental human need. He was highly concerned about the quality of life of our children and decided to help in making them better citizens of the future. We all salute Mr. Smith for standing firm and struggling to upgrade the standard of these schools. They have been of immense value to the people of this region. I am quite sure he is happy to leave the earth after this great accomplishment that has been so dear to him.

Mr. Smith was an acclaimed politician and representative of this region as a political leader. As a politician, he has fervently fought for the rights of the local people and helped in ensuring people have better living standards. Mr. Smith has been a pioneer of infrastructural development in this area and we all know the tribulations he has experienced in his quest for developed infrastructure. His legacy in changing this area is inscribed in the history books of this region and I am quite sure the generations to come will still immortalize him for providing a solid basis of social and economic development. He did this because it was his wish and passion to see the local prospering in their social and economic endeavors. Therefore, anything that hampered the development of the local people such as poor roads saddened him.

Mr. Smith has been a great mentor to all of us in life. His attitude towards the challenges of life was quite encouraging to us. Those of us who have had the chance of mingling with Mr. Smith during difficult times will fondly recall his famous words, “This is not a problem, but simply a challenge with its solution available.” This personal motto always came from his mouth whenever he was in a crisis. I am quite sure it gave him the feeling of optimism and hope, which then propelled him to finding solutions for every difficult situation he experienced.

Mr. Smith was a family man. While we acknowledge his imperfections, it is quite vital to recognize that he was quite loving and supportive to all his family members. He had a sense of humor that lit the faces of all who were around him. He considered the family as a very special entity and would make time to come back and meet closest relatives even during non-holiday days. To friends, he was a man who would ensure the connection remained vibrant and active. He never let friendship die easily because of lack of contact. He always kept in touch and even initiated meetings with friends. Workmates will nostalgically recall the stupendous dedication with which Mr. Smith did his work. He was an ardent stickler to perfection in every duty that he did.
