The documentary Babies follows the development of newborn from different parts of the world. The babies are Ponijao from Namibia, Mari from Tokyo, Bayar from Mongolia, and Hattie from California. Despite their development form different cultures, there exist similarities in their ability to learn how to crawl, walk, and talk. Although some learn faster than others, the bottom line is that timeframe in their development is almost similar. Another similarity is that Ponijao and Hattie live in an interactive environment and Bayar and Mari are explorative in their way. Also, Ponijao and Bayar come from underdeveloped countries with water scarcity while Mari and Hatti are exposed to technological advancements (Best & Ganapathy-Coleman, 2017)

The babies pose differences in their development process. Bayar is explorative and curious while Ponijao is quick to share and interact with his family. Mari grew in a Japanese apartment and hardly has the opportunity to interrelate with other children. However, Mari shows his independence and the ability to interact with toys and his father’s equipment. Hattie in contrary lives a pampered life with yoga classes which provide her with an opportunity to interact with other babies as compared to Mari (Best & Ganapathy-Coleman, 2017) . Children health is a concern from Bayer’s mother and Ponijao due to water scarcity while in Japan and California children are bathed, and diapers changed regularly.

Additionally, the babies sleeping schedule differ among the four babies. Hattie and Mari sleep schedule is regulated, monitored and the mothers are always there to ensure babies don’t fall while rolling. Contrary, the mothers of Ponijao and Bayar are not much concerned about the baby sleeping schedule and baby security while sleeping is at stake. Additionally, chicken is hoping on Bayar while asleep and Ponijao unspecific nap time is a depiction of parents less concerned about the children (Best & Ganapathy-Coleman, 2017) . Also, children familiarity with technological development differs between the cultures. Step by step child development is taken seriously by Mari and Hatti parents while Ponijao and Bayar are left to discover their way. 

Nurture influences are experienced among the four children as they grow in different environmental conditions and exposures. It is through nurture and nature (babies’ genetic abilities) interaction that determine how the baby will develop. Nurture is depicted when Ponijao learn how to walk easily since the most time he is free compared Mari who is always indoors. Nature is depicted when babies portrayed cognition skills when Hattie peeled a banana and Mari trying to put a sticker on a paper. It is through nature that the babies can realise their genetic potential (Cohen, 2017) . Literature features such as imitation are used throughout the film. We can see children copying their parent and try to repeat what they said before. Also, independence and mystery are portrayed on Ponijao and Bayar to give us an imagery view that children ought to be independent sometime and learn their way. 

My experience relates to the families of children from California and Japan. Children in my neighbourhood attend yoga classes their mothers are more concerned about childhood development. There is a specific nap time for the children. Similarly, almost every home has toys and puppies which children play with. Children playing with sticks and other objects is regarded as harmful exposures. 

The documentary surprised me as there was no narration which is not common to most of the documentaries. Also, there were no subtitles to give us the picture of how other cultural groups talk and the tone they use (Best & Ganapathy-Coleman, 2017) . Additionally, the documentary gives focus on child development in consecutive events conducted by different culture making it unique. Chicken jumping on Bayar while asleep was frightening. 

The documentary influenced my view on childhood development and underlying factors that children go through in their development period. Every parent needs to watch this documentary. I understood that children development could be affected by environmental factors such as technological advancements. Children in developed countries can learn faster compared to an underdeveloped country. However, developmental skills such as ease to walk and talk is faster in children from Namibia and Mongolia compared to developed countries where children have minimum interaction. There is a need to promote children interaction and independence in promoting faster children development.
