Music is one of the world’s oldest humankind invention. People over the years have used music to pass a message, express their feelings and emotions, for entertainment among other reasons. Stories have been told on how music was used in wars as a way of praising the warriors and encouraging them to continue protecting the community. An example is during the Second World War, whereby music was used as a propaganda tool to incite people against opponents (Avramova, 2019). Furthermore, from the holy bible, we have a well-known musician by the name King Solomon, who wrote a whole book (Song of Solomon) to praise God and pass an important message to the people. All these scenarios demonstrate the impact of music in contemporary society.
Today, there are many types of music such as hip-hop, jazz, blues, country music, reggae, rock among others. All these types of music satisfy people in different ways. However, what is evident is that they communicate different messages such as love, sorrow, and happiness, which thrills the listeners. Music tends to influence how people think, behave and their overall attitude meaning it has emotional effects. Johnny Depp once said, “ Music touches us emotionally, where words alone can’t. ” Personally, music has helped me during my sad times since listening to music makes me forget all my worries. I also use music as an encouragement tool especially when things seem tough.

According to Nopanen (2018), people listen to music as stress depressant, others listen when they are sad but most use it as an entertainment tool. Doctors and psychologists agree that music has a medicinal effect especially for dementia patients who tend to remember their childhood music. Researchers have associated this phenomenon to the ability of music lighting up various parts of the brain thus arousing forgotten memories in a person. Apart from the medicinal music effect, music also tends to influence people behaviors, thinking, and perceptions. Nowadays, musicians are looked upon by youths as their mentors and Heroes and tend to mimic these celebrities behavior. The revelation proves that indeed music has moral and society effect on the listeners (Huang, 2016). On that note, the discussion herein aims to investigate the impact of music in contemporary society and how best to take advantage of it.
