The concept of global citizenship is not a new one. Global citizenship can be traced as far back as Ancient Greece ( Green, 2012 ). However, globalization has received a new concept based on how it is used in higher education in the current world. Multiple institutions have cited the concept of global citizenship in their mission statements and an outcome of internalization and liberal education. The concept continues to find new inroads to multiple sectors and professions in society. These new trends indicate that the idea of global citizenship is continuously evolving. Global citizenship is important because the modern world is full of cultural diversity where thousands of people from different parts of the world can meet in one place. Therefore, the power of global citizenship in education cannot be matched. One of the most significant benefits of global citizenship is that it helps people be active because it motivates them to learn something more than they already know about others.
The Distinction between “Globalism” and “Globalization.”
Globalism and globalization are related terms but are widely different in several ways. Globalism describes a world characterized by connections and networks that span large distances and promotes free trade and racial mixing ( Voelz, 2017). Globalism is inclined to understanding how the world interconnects and highlights and underlines patterns that explain the patterns. On the other hand, globalization defines the increase and decrease of globalism. Globalization is also defined as a global outlook of various cultures’ interactions ( Stringer, 2017). Generally, globalization focuses more on explaining changes in dynamism and the speed of dynamism.

Global citizenship in the World of Advanced Technology
After watching the video, it is evident why everyone should endeavor to appreciate global citizenship. Technology has greatly enhanced how people meet and socialize, primarily through text messaging and emailing (Free To Choose Network, 2015). In the modern world, where advanced technology is a key requirement in higher learning institutions, information technology will help people meet their personal, educational, and professional goals. People acquire most of the information from the internet. Through the internet, people can meet with different individuals from different parts of the world. As a result, becoming a global citizen through the global world will enhance my pursuits and enhance my professional interests.
Disagreements between Theorists about the Definition of Global Citizenship
The theoretical aspects of global citizenship are a major focus of most disciplines. However, disagreements have arisen on the meaning of globalism. The term global citizenship has always been used interchangeably and distinctively by theorists. As various scholars and theorists continue to use the term “global citizenship” in different forums and disciplines, the term’s misunderstanding continues to grow. My definition of global citizenship is drawn from commonalities and interdisciplinary discussions. In my definition, global citizenship is the attribute in some people to have a wider understanding of the world, leading them to be respectful, responsible, and morally conscious.
Outcomes of Global Citizenship
The two outcomes that I chose are valuing diversity and intergroup empathy. Valuing diversity is when individuals understand their world so well that they understand and respect differences in people’s culture and practices from different parts of the world. People who can be described as global citizens must be of such a nature to appreciate diversity. Intergroup empathy defines members of a group who identify with emotions and are well concerned for other groups. The word empathy elicits a greater strength and plays a vital role in enhancing intergroup relations. It can help members that belong to a particular group with different views and ideas to love together cohesively and harmoniously.
Importance of the Outcomes in Global Citizenship
The two outcomes are the most important prerequisites in aiding an individual to become a global citizen because they are founded on a platform in which globalism is etched. Valuing diversity and intergroup empathy helps people cultivate and embrace such values to augur well with people from different parts of the world. For example, valuing diversity is important in exploring global citizenship and supporting the growth of confidence in comprehending other people’s beliefs and cultures in different parts of the world. Intergroup helping benefits those who are especially without the same group of an individual. Intergroup helping also allows people to have skills that help them solve and make decisions, especially in communicating their ideas effectively and efficiently.
Personal Examples
The classroom is a significant example of an event that demonstrates the development of global citizenship. Several issues are addressed in the classroom through multiple learning and teaching methodologies. For example, debates in classrooms allow students to educate others on what they have learned. Another example is when employees working in multinational corporations transfer to other parts of the world. The employees will have to interact with new people and make new connections and friendships.
General Education Courses
One of the education courses that significantly influence global citizenship is public education. Public education allows individuals to acquire vital skills, values, and attitudes to thrive in various parts of the world. Another course is public relations. This course will enable individuals to understand how to form vital ties with people from other parts of the world.
