Research, especially on aspects of education, requires one to be acute and assertive (Gay & Miles, 2011). These elementary guidelines form the foundations of this research. The working title of the study is “The Impact of Literature Circles on Students Attitudes towards Reading and Overall School Success.” So as to find a conclusive answer to this question, this study will utilize a combination of qualitative and quantitative research design. The question that directs the study is “what impact does literature circles have on students’ attitudes towards reading and overall school success?” The purpose of these study is to determine how elementary and intermediate students are affected by the use of heterogeneous grouping of literature circles. As such the researcher will conduct research with students, who are using literacy circles and those who are not using it in classes.
In most schools nowadays, students are put into smaller groups where they are asked to review a certain piece of literature in much detail. Each student is supposed to read the literature first so as to get their individual perspective about the given book. After reading, they then come into groups to share their perspectives regarding the piece of work. Some of the aspects the students may discuss in their groups include characters and events presented in the book, sometimes linking these aspects to the real world situations. Such form of literature study has been said to be effective in bringing out the best in students by making them responsible. Nevertheless, various study findings indicate that this approach broadens students’ thinking capacities through extensive reading and research. However, little research has been done to determine the impact of Literature Circles on individual students regarding performance and general success in classwork. Further, no clear stipulation has been suggested on how this approach impacts on students’ reading abilities. It is due to these reasons that this study finds it necessary to fill the gap left by previous researchers. Since the research will be more of qualitative and less of quantitative, the researcher will make use of students who are using literature circles and those that are not using in accordance to Gay & Mills (2011). Finally, the researcher will compare their performance and reading behaviors.
