Local 54 union represents workers in the hospitality sector for over the last many years. The members include a wide range of professions, including door attendants, housekeepers, bartenders, and cocktail servers. Besides, it also represents certain service jobs at casinos in the broader hospitality sector. As an affiliate of UNITE HERE, Local 54 has over 10000 members from across various states ( UNITE HERE, 2020 ). The union represents its members in negotiations with the employers, and also assists its members in a wide range of areas on labor relations. For example, the association represents the members in collective bargaining for better pay and improved working conditions. The workers in the hospitality sector can have a strong voice and stand against any form of unfair labor practices. With a large number of members represented, union 54 ensures that the employers do not mistreat all its members. It represents members in any dispute with the employers and even file lawsuits for any unfair labor practices. UNITE HERE, the parent union for Local 54, represents the workers both in the United States and Canada. Like Local 54, the majority of the workers represented are in the hospitality sector, with key areas being those in a hotel, gaming, and laundry ( UNITE HERE, 2020 ).

Local 54 unions have filed numerous unfair labor practices charges with the National Labor Relations Board against employers. For example, the employees of the Taj Mahal shared the proceeds of the settlement agreement following a case that was filed by the union ( Hussein et al., 2020 ). It was to compensate the members for unfair dismissal and other labor practices that are considered unfair. The National Labor Relations Act allows the workers in any sector to be members of a trade union. It further gives the employees the right to take part in strikes and form a joint bargaining power for favorable working conditions. Since its formation, Local 54 union has helped improve the working conditions, fair pay, and negotiated for other benefits to the employees in the hospitality sector. The workers have been prevented from unfair labor practices such as unfair dismissal. In the protection of casino workers, this labor union has been able to prevent layoffs by casino owners, which leads to job losses without notices. The Local 54 union allows for workers within the hospitality sector to join and be part of the team advocating for better working conditions. As a recognized union working as an affiliate of UNITE HERE, Local 54 has become a champion for ensuring employers do not violate the rights of workers.

In a union-represented workplace, seniority affects the majority of the decisions that are made about the workers. The decisions, such as wages and working conditions, are made based on the agreements between the labor unions and employers. As a legal representative to its members in the collective bargaining agreement, Local 54 negotiates the various employees' privileges, including the seniority. The terms and conditions of work are agreed based on the employment conditions as having been agreed under the union contract. In a workplace where there is a need for layoffs, the senior employees still possess job rights compared to the most recent workers.
