Many authors and psychologists have tried to define the term intelligence, but end up contradicting each other while others support and supplement the existing definitions. As a result, many controversies surround the meaning of IQ. Most authors and psychologists in the field of intelligence claim that it is a result of the combination as well as the interaction between genes and the environment (Telecommunications (a), n.d.). Thus, no one can argue that either of the two factors does not contribute to an individual’s intelligence (Telecommunications (b), n.d.). As for psychologist Joyce Bishop, IQ varies depending on the type that one wants to define. For instance, intrapersonal, physical, musical, and spatial intelligence differ in their meaning. Thus, one of the controversies that surround the definition of knowledge as well as its measurement and sources of individual differences is encouraged by Joyce.

The argument of psychologist Joyce is backed up by several authors. Particularly, one cannot define intelligence in general because one may be perfect in one area compared to the other. Hence, when it comes to learning, tutors should base their teaching styles on all forms of intelligence. A student might grasp well while learning on his or her own while others learn through music or physical objects because that is where their IQ lies (Ghraibeh, 2012, p. 103). Hence, every individual is intelligent in his or her way. As a result, human qualities cannot be used to determine one’s IQ because it will differ from one perspective to the other (Ma & Schapira, 2017, p. 21)

In conclusion, intelligence is a broad theme that cannot be defined using one sentence or explanation. However, despite the controversies it brings along, one can interpret it in their way depending on the area of concentration. For instance, if one loves music, then he/she will major in defining intelligence from the perspective of music. As a result, one can be better in one subject or area while weak in another discipline.
