It is increasingly becoming clear that humanity is slowly but surely leading to the death of the earth as is demonstrated by global warming, and human-made disasters (nuclear disasters, pollution, oil spills, etc.) that destroy the ecosystem. Consequently, I believe the next invention should seek to address how we can save the planet or look for alternatives should the damage have become irreversible causing the Earth to become inhabitable. The solution can be realized through interstellar and interplanetary travel technology that reduces time traveled between stars and planets to limits that are rational (hours, days or weeks). As it is today, traveling to the second closest planet to Earth, Mars, would take roughly two and a half years. The time involved makes it virtually impossible to travel to other galaxies or planets. Consequently, there is a need for a new technology that will greatly reduce traveling time to other planets and galaxies.
Scientists have provided theatrical proof that the universe is virtually infinite. Therefore, I believe with this infinite nature of the universe lies infinite possibilities that can help the society, as we know it. For instance, one of the biggest challenges that humanity faces is the search for alternative and clean sources of energy to fossil fuels that have the same efficiency and sustainability. However, although solar technology and other renewable sources provide alternatives, the rate at which this technology is developed is excruciatingly slow. Further, clean alternative technologies are hardly able to sustain the energy needs that humankind needs. Consequently, with the help of interstellar technology humankind can explore other planets and galaxies for material that can provide a solution. It is a known fact that some planets contain elements that have the potential to emit energy synonymous with nuclear materials but with lesser negative effects. Considering the vastness of the universe, it may also not be surprising to find renewable energy sources that are self-sustaining.

Further, pollution on earth is exacerbated by the fact that we have technology that can cleanly dispose of waste without negative environmental ramifications. As such, we are forced to bury radioactive waste, direct industry refuse into waterways and burn plastic waste, which eventually has negative consequences to the environment. Interstellar travel could alleviate the pollution on our planet by transporting waste material to the endless possibilities of uninhabitable planets. In so doing, our planet remains pollution free with the added benefit of not having any negative repercussions of this type of waste disposal. Finally, interstellar travel would enable us to look for other habitable planets. This would alleviate the current problem of overpopulation that is putting a strain on earth’s resources. New habitable planets would reduce the fight for resources on earth between nations, which has in the past led to world wars. Further, these planets would serve as a basis to start new ideal colonies with each colony/planet constituting people with the same ideals hence eliminating conflicts that are so rampant in our world today.
In conclusion, besides these benefits, interstellar travel holds infinite benefits ranging from the discovery of new chemicals, medicines, foods, and species that can hold the solutions to so many of humankind's problems. Due to its endless possibilities and applications, I believe this kind of invention should be the next invention of the generation.
