Interview with a Fired Person: What It's Really Like to Get Fired

Brandon Scott is one of the students at the University of Houston majoring in Biology. He is 23 years-old. Initially, he secured his first job with CVS Pharmacy, which is a profit company, where he worked for three years. First, Brandon was employed as a cashier before he was promoted to be a shift supervisor in the same company. Unfortunately, Brandon was fired by the company for engaging in fraudulent activities that made the company to lose huge sums of money. His type of job before he was fired was retail and customer services. 

Contrary to what other people may feel Brandon felt that his firing was fairly handled by the company. The way in which the case was handled convinced him that the company managers engaged in a fair process before he was fired. The managers privately handled the situation away from other employees in the company. They explained to him using the handbook policy that his cases warranted automatic termination. Therefore, the managers did not make personal decisions to fire him, but their actions were based on the company policy. Even though Brandon acknowledge his termination as fair, he felt that he needed to be given a second chance since it was his first fraudulent case in the company. Brandon felt disappointed at himself after he got fired and he did not blame anybody for his misfortunes or mistakes. He owned the responsibility for his mistakes and behavior.

Brandon was fired because he engaged in fraudulent use of coupons. He was found to be guilty of using the coupons that clients did not want to his own benefits. The company policy required Brandon to through away coupons that clients did not want. In the contrary, he used the coupons to buy his own item for free and sometimes at low prices. Consequently, the company lost a lot of money, which led to the investigation on why the sale of coupon was extremely high. The manager and loss prevention unit used cameras to investigate employee cash register. As a result, Brandon was caught in camera engaging in a fraudulent coupon. Therefore, he fired because he was stealing money from the company, which was against the policy and code of ethics. Brandon did not think that there was other reason why he was fired apart from being caught stealing money from the company. At the same time, the company did not mention any other reason why it fired Brandon. 

There was no any social contact that Brandon lost when he was fired. The manager who fired hi strictly followed the company’s policy that was contained in the handbook. Besides, he enjoyed good relations with managers in the company, and even the head manager accepted to be his referee when he gets another job. Therefore, Brandon was enjoying good relations with the people at CVS Pharmacy even at the time when he was being fired, which show that the managers made the decision to fire him based on the company policy and did not have any ill motive against him. 

In order to get another job, Brandon mainly relied on the assistance from his family members and friends. They were recommending for him places where he could apply the jobs. At the same time, friends and family members were linking with people who could help hem secure a job. Besides, he was applying for jobs in places he frequently visited such as gym and some local events that were taking place around the campus. In addition, to boost his chances of getting another job, Brandon attended career fair within his college. Furthermore, he relied on the internet search engines like Indeed.com to apply for similar jobs. Therefore, Brandon used various techniques to get a new job after he was fired. 

Contrary to my expectations, did not have LinkedIn and he was not aware of its existence and importance in finding a job. Therefore, I explained to him that Linked is one of the social media networks that enable subscribers to create, manage, and share their professional identities, including qualifications and experience with a network of other professionals. In addition, I explained to him that he can get a job through LinkedIn by writing a detailed summary of his career and by listing his skills and experience. Besides, LinkedIn gives him the opportunity to interact with people in his line of profession, which can enhance his chances of getting a job after graduating. 

The interviewee argued he can improve his interview skills by learning how to answer the questions better. In addition, he can enhance his interview skills by improving his communication, especially verbal and interpersonal skills. He also believes that he can do better in an interview when he remains calm and composed when he appears before the interviewee panel. 

Lastly, according to the interviewee, he would have handled the firing differently by recommending either a suspension or a cut in his weekly hours. His argument was based on the fact that it was his first offense in the company and he deserved some leniency even though the company policy required that he be terminated. As a result, he needed second chance to avoid the same mistake in the future.
