From watching the video, I feel Matilda is progressing nicely in her motor development. She can balance, lean from side to side, and also back and forth without falling over. Her movement is a perfect use of her gross motor skills. According to Groark, McCarthy, & Kirk (2014), not only do gross motor skills allow a child to move in several ways, but they also enable the child to control their body movements. Aside from her gross motor skills, Matilda can also close, open, and grasp the seashell and tin can. She uses her fine motor skills, which involve coordination of slight muscle movements, normally in hands and fingers (Groark, McCarthy & Kirk, 2014). These skills allow a child to hold and manipulate objects, just like Matilda was doing with the seashell.

During my observations, I noticed Matilda was not making sounds, aside from a single mumble. While it might be early to jump to such a conclusion, considering I have only seen Matilda for only a few minutes, I am rather concerned with her communication or language development. For instance, I did not hear her make frequent sounds such as mumbles, groans, and other sounds that babies usually make when playing. The only sound she made was soft, and it was not a response to anything. I feel she needs help with her communication development.

As her parent or guardian, you and Matilda can engage in several activities to assist with her communication development. One home activity would be to imitate some words and sounds that are familiar to Matilda. Continue with this activity until she can repeat those same words and sounds perfectly. You can then move on to new ones. Another fun activity would be the reflection activity. Set up a mirror in front of yourself and Matilda, then make unique sounds and faces. Matilda will try to copy your actions, and this will assist with her development.

Overall, Matilda’s development is progressing nicely. From her seashell and tin can activity, I could see that she is determined to understand, which is key in child development. With some help with her communication development, her progress will be right on track as that of a normal child. Interacting with Matilda is key for her development, and as her parent, I have to commend the great job you have done in that regard. Keep interacting with her and incorporate more language activities and above all, continue to care for and love her as you have always done.
