The International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List of Threatened Species is an organization that provides to the world environmental information concerning the status of animals, fungi and plant species conservation globally. It is an indicator of the general health of the world biodiversity and provides information on ways that can be used in the conservation of natural resources in order for them to survive. Researchers can use the database for the purpose of research about different species of plants and animals. The number of records for animals is higher than that of plants in the data base with chordate being the highest in number of all other animal species.

Endangered species are the kind of animals or plants that are at risk of getting extinct while a vulnerable species is one that has been listed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature as a species that is at risk of falling in the category of endangered species unless circumstances that put it in danger of survival are improved. An endangered species is in a worse condition compared to a vulnerable species.

This is a low number compared to The United States of America, which has a total number of 10636 species that are endangered. The U.S has a very high number of endangered species. The difference in the endangered number of species between the two countries could be due to the fact that Antarctica is more conservative of its species than America.
