Jackson Pollock painted Untitled (Green Silver) in the year 1949, he painted this particular piece in the decades that followed after the world war Two ( Varnedoe, 1999) . This was the era when action painting and abstract expression began to take off in the painting world, better known as the drip period. The Green Silver was painted by use of abstract expressionism leading to the creation of a completely new direction in the world of art. The reason why most artists were ready to incorporate action painting in their work was because these were times when there was human irrationality worldwide and they therefore sought ways to express concerns by use of these painting methods. Jackson Pollock is well known to incorporate abstract expressions as well as action painting in his works especially his masterpieces, he most probably altered the course of art forever with these types of paintings ( Emmerling, 2003).
In the 1930’s Pollock begun working on figuration of imaginary beings and humans. He employed the use of calligraphic markings, distinctive color palette and mythical subject matter which produced emotionally charged work which emphasized abstract qualities. All of this is expressed in his work Untitled (Green Silver) as it was perceived as the perfect example of pure abstraction. He abandoned direct contact with the surface as he worked on this painting as he worked above the picture plane dripping and pouring enamel paints on his canvas or papers. This technique required the use of liquid paint because it was easier to use for spilling or drizzling from tips of sticks or trowels and this was also known as action painting.
