Kenyaembassyberlin.de is a website of the Embassy of Kenya in Germany which presents the country “Kenya” as a suitable place for foreigners to visit and invest. It presents information which would be necessary for a foreign investor to known before investing in the East African country. The ‘Investment Opportunity’ section of the website mainly bears information of the Agriculture, Tourism and Infrastructure. The author of the page mainly describes the sectors as presenters of investment opportunities. It describes its infrastructure as effective and efficient. For instance, the road network is 177, 800km (Kenyaembassyberlin.de n.d.). The infrastructural development described is one which fits the needs of the people and investors as well.

The website has various pages which give further details of the country that an investor would wish to know. At the home page, an interested investor gets all travel, contact information and other kinds of the country’s updates. There is also a page titled “About Kenya”. The inherent information is the country’s history, geography, people, culture, sports and the media. The information is aimed at helping a foreign investor understand the environment of the market in which they would wish to invest. At the ‘History’ page of the website, information is disseminated of the country’s early years and visitors. It communicates to the audience the country’s perception of visitors, which is actually not bad. In most cases, the people are welcoming to visitors from all walks of life. With that, the country has had numerous visors over the years.

The geography section contains information which enables individuals to understand location, area and towns of the country. There are also images of different locations and people. From the Geography section, the country is actually a good place where one would comfortably reside. The ‘People’ section gives details of the people of Kenya. According to the website, there were approximately 38, 610, 097 people in 2009(Kenyaembassyberlin.de n.d). The urban cities are densely populated while the rural ones are scarcely populated. The main cities include Nairobi, Mombasa, Nakuru and Kisumu among others. The people are diverse and to confirm that, there are numerous ethnic groups and different religions being practiced in the country. Christianity is the mainly practiced religion and Bantu speaking people are the most. Swahili and English are the official languages spoken.

There is a webpage presenting details about the country’s Government. The structure of Kenya’s Government is consistent of the executive, parliament, Judiciary and devolved government. The other WebPages present crucial information such as bilateral relations, visas, certificates and citizenship among others. There is also travel information in the website, generally the website is simple and allows for the user to maneuver through effectively.

Depiction of the Country

To a certain extent, the website depicts the country accurately. For instance, the information such as the country’s geography and other official information are accurate. The information is the same across various other platforms. There is however inaccuracy in the depiction of the country when various other information are considered. In the website, the information polishes everything making the country to appear perfect for investments. For instance, in the images found on the ‘Geography Section’, the country is depicted as having good roads and well organized cities. What are depicted are major towns-- a portion of it to be specific. This is actually for advertisement purpose.

Information in relation to other sources

A look at various other websites describing the country raises some doubts. The truth is that the infrastructure of the country is not that well developed. There are places where roads are full of dust. In the case it rains, the dust turns into mud thereby making the people have hard time to access different places. The infrastructural development still has a long way to go.

Kamau’s article at capitalfm.co.ke depicts the country differently and perhaps more accurately since he quotes a cabinet secretary for infrastructure describing “the infrastructure as deplorable and political climate as unstable” (2018). This particular source depicts the country differently. The political environment of the country is often faced with turmoil whenever national elections set in. This is proven by the country’s political violence witnessed after the national elections where the former president Kibaki was declared the winner. The opposition led by Raila Odinga claimed that there were malpractices which led to the loser being declared the winner. Violence erupted and as a result, more than 1400 people died in the violence (Brownsell, 2013).

Basing on what was learnt from other sources, the website kenyanembassyberlin.de fails to give an accurate portrayal of the country. It does depict the country as a perfect place with the best people and infrastructure. This is contrary to what some reliable sources say about the country. A further research of the country could reveal more accurate information about the suitability for foreign investment.
