The interview was significantly insightful as I got to learn aspects of my prospective career that I may not have encountered in class. Dr. Whitehorn is a professional who has vast experience in the counseling field and he presented the best candidate for the interview. The interview focused on aspects of the career that would help me better prepare for becoming an effective counseling psychologist. I learned that education is critical and the more one advances through the ladders of higher learning, the better it is to acquire knowledge that will make one’s practice better. I identified that it would be important for me to experience the counseling process and relationship as a client before becoming the therapist as this would widen my understanding of the entire experience. I also learned that sometimes the therapist may want the change more than the client and this could make the counseling relationship somewhat rocky for both parties.
I further identified that one’s workload increases over time and there may be instances where the therapist gets behind on issues like documentation. The interview was further informative on identifying a specific area of specialization where one needs to focus on as a therapist to ensure that clients get the best therapy. Such specialization provides the therapist with the opportunity to sharpen his or her skills in a given area of counseling thereby providing consumers with unquestionable services. The interview also revealed the importance of a therapist’s awareness of his or her strengths and weaknesses and how to work on these. I also learned aspects of the corporate world I believe will be essential for when I venture into my career. I will need to connect with my colleagues at all levels to ensure that we all engage in organizational advancement at whatever capacity.

The insight from the interview will guide my practice and leadership choices to a great extent. I am planning to acquire as much educational training in counseling psychology as I can as this will help build on my knowledge base and further increase my ability to help clients. I am also looking to specialize in a given field of counseling to maximize my potential of success in helping clients deal with specific psychological issues affecting their optimal functioning. I will ensure to be part of the therapeutic relationship as the client to help advance my understanding of the interaction and guide the decisions I make when I become the therapist. As a leader in the working environment, I will ensure to advance a welcoming and warm working relationship with my subordinates as the interview shows the criticality of such a relationship not only for the leader and subordinates, but for the entire organization. I will ensure to include every individual in the decision making process for the organization to ensure that we all feel connected and part of the organization’s progress. It will also help all parties in the organization feel appreciated and develop a sense of belonging because their opinions and impact will be evident in the decisions made. I will also ensure to remain innovative and open minded at the individual and organizational level. Innovation will be important in helping overcome obstacles at these two levels of my life. I will also ensure to always be aware of my strengths and weaknesses to allow for improvement on areas of weaknesses and appreciate the areas of success.
