Summary
Shekema Silveri explores the challenges that children face and how to protect children in the article Let the Babies Lead! Children are regarded as a country’s weakest and most vulnerable citizens who should be protected and served by educators (Silveri, 2018). The media has played a great role in pointing out the issues that are affecting children in the current society. To address the issue of injustice and discrimination in community and the need to fight these vices, Silveri uses a 1963 excerpt from President Kennedy’s regarding the issue of American People Civil Rights.
Silveri points out different problems facing children in the current society. One is that there are cases of social injustices that students face in their daily lives. Secondly, there are cases of physical attacks on students as there have been reported cases of gun violence in schools and places of worship (Silveri, 2018). Sexual abuse on children has also been published in the social media. It has become a challenge for children to overcome these issues because parents, teachers, and guardians are focused on their academic performance hence neglecting the physical and psychological pain that children are exposed to.

Silveri goes ahead to provide solutions that parents can use to help children to overcome challenges that they face. One is to provide them with skills and strategies that will help them to overcome problems they encounter. This includes making them to speak out through blogging or other platforms and providing them with the necessary education (Silveri, 2018). Accordingly, classrooms should be used to prepare students to speak up and challenge individuals. Children should also practice being bold to fight against any oppression. Children also need to be taught the practice of self-care so that they can be their ‘warriors’.
Opinion
In my opinion, many parents and guardians have focused so much on the educational aspects of students to the extent of ignoring their (children’s) physical and psychological safety. Thus, cases of social injustices, discrimination, sexual abuse, and gun violence have become rampant. The media has played a great role in pointing out these issues and bringing them to light. As a result, parents, guardians, and teachers should strive to ensure that all aspects of children are addressed; be it in school, churches, or at home. Children need to be able to stand up for themselves, therefore they should be empowered to speak up. Thus, I am in support that educators, parents, and guardians need to provide an environment where children can defend themselves.
