NY Counselor Requirements
The requirements for a Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor (CASAC) are divided into various sections. These sections indicate the credentialing procedure, and include the minimum qualifications, competency and ethical conduct evaluation, work experience and education and training (Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services, N.D.). The minimum qualifications to become a CASAC are an age limit of 18 years, individual must have a high school diploma or at least a General Equivalency Diploma (GED), and they must either work or reside within the state of New York at least 51% of the time (Department of Labor, N.D.). For the evaluation of competency and ethical conduct, the counselor must have three individuals who have observed them over a minimum of six months, and have knowledge of their work experience as guarantors. In terms of work experience, to become a New York state CASAC counselor one needs to have an experience of 6000 hours, or approximately three years, experience that is full time, supervised and within an approved counseling setting. For the education, a minimum of 350 clock hours studying chemical dependence counseling is necessary (Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services, N.D.). Additionally, counselors must pass the International Certification and Reciprocity Consortium, Inc (ICRC) examination for Alcohol and Drug Counselors (Department of Labor, N.D).
