The most interesting thing learned from the video about macromolecules was that nothing and no one can avoid carbohydrates as they are the source of all the energy available to living organisms. The statement piqued my curiosity as it conflicts with some of the nutritional beliefs currently being held by some dieters. Some dieters have been adopting some extreme measures in an effort to watch their body weight. Completely cutting out carbohydrates has been one of these drastic measures. From the video, I have learned of the need to incorporate carbohydrates into our diets, as they help provide energy to the body cells more readily than fats or proteins.

Low-carb diets are associated with health benefits such as aiding in weight loss, reducing the risk for type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease (Mayo Clinic, 2020; Wylie-Rosett et al., 2012) . However, completely cutting out carbohydrates from the diet is associated with some detrimental health effects. According to Fachetti (2020), completely removing carbohydrates from the diet makes the body go into starvation mode and use glycogen stored in the liver. After the exhaustion of glycogen, fat, and muscle cells are broken down to produce energy. The breakdown of fats leads to the production of ketone bodies by the liver. The prolonged lack of intake of carbohydrates leads accumulation of ketones in the body. The accumulation of ketones to levels of between 15 to 25 mM creates a life-threatening case known as ketoacidosis (Fachetti, 2020). Ketoacidosis is exhibited through vomiting, fatigue, bad breath, abdominal pain, frequent urination, thirst, confusion, and loss of consciousness, amongst other symptoms. Ketoacidosis is a life-threatening condition with negative impacts on our health. The results support my hypothesis that completely eliminating carbohydrates in our diets negatively affects our health in the short term.
