Stress is a feeling of being under overwhelming pressure. Stress affects decision making by altering how we weigh rewards and risks. Under stress, we can make good decisions by paying more attention to the rewards of available alternatives and less to the liabilities. In addition, under stress, the compulsion to get a reward is stronger, which results in good decision mainly as a result of result-oriented judgment triggered by stress levels. In this regard, this paper gives a brief overview of stressful decision making and the strategies used to cope with stress.

Coping refers to the process of channeling mental and conscious energy towards dealing with stress in life (Glazer & Liu,2017). Mechanisms used for stress coping can be classified into three; appraisal focused, problem-focused, and emotion-focused mechanisms. Appraisal-focused mechanisms involve thoughts linked to the stressor. Particularly, in appraisal-focused mechanisms, people change how they think about issues by altering their approach of shifting their values and goals.

Meditation and relaxation are some of the strategies for coping with stress. Meditation, among other behaviors such as deep breathing and exercise, have a positive impact on coping and minimizing stress levels (Glazer & Liu,2017). Ideally, meditation is somewhat a spiritual practice that enhances stress management by triggering parts of the brain implicated in calmness and relaxation, thus reducing the stress levels. Relaxation is another positive coping technique that can also minimize the levels of experienced pressure.

In conclusion, teenagers experience and cope with stressful conditions daily. I once encountered a teen who was having a difficult time scoring good grades and maintaining a good record in football, which funded his scholarship and making time for theatre, which was his passion. In his case, I recommend relaxation and meditation and physical activity. As soon as we discern that a situation is no longer as precarious, our mentality and bodies naturally calm down and relax. The relaxation mechanisms include controlled breathing and reduced pulse rate, a technique designed to help the teenager feel more in control and less helpless. Considering his age, I also encouraged him to continue engaging in physical activity to channel his emotions and stress to achieve relaxation.
