Factitious disorder is a mental disorder where people exaggerate the symptoms and effects of a disease towards themselves or another person. Malingering is people who exaggerate symptoms of a disease for personal gain. Factitious disorder is a mental condition, while malingering is a personal choice.

Similarities

Factitious disorders involve doing the same actions for different reasons. Differences

In Factitious disorder, there is no clear intention. People do it to seek attention, and some people are firmly attached to being sick or being a caregiver to an infected person. Malingerers perform the same actions but to gain from them. Malingerers usually suffer from a type of disorder, such as antisocial behavior. They fake illnesses to get time off work, to defraud insurance, or to get prescription drugs. Malingering is not a mental disorder but a personal choice.

Conclusion

Malingerers and people with Factitious disorder may gain certain advantages from these conditions. Malingerers fake illnesses to avoid prison time or to get off work. These are physical advantages. Some fake diseases of their loved ones, especially children, so they can benefit from organizations such as cancer foundations. People with factitious disorder gain sympathy and feeling loved. They fake sickness of a loved one so they can feel useful and loving.
