When thinking of highly transmissible viruses, it is hard to bypass measles. Measles virus has the capability of staying alive for even 2 or more hours outside a person’s body on the surface or the air. All the same, rather than waiting for the infection to occur vaccination against measles would prove handy.

According to authorities, there are a number of measles outbreak cases across Georgia as well as some of the surrounding states. Those who are mostly infected are under the age of 10. The main reason for the outbreak is because according to estimations, about a handful of people within the state had not been immunized against the disease which put many people in danger. The main reason for not getting the vaccine is due to the belief possessed by a number of mothers in the state, believing that the vaccination would do harm to their babies rather than good

Immunization against measles is very beneficial to an individual and all those who are around them as well as the whole nation at large. Immunization is believed to be the most cost-effective measure when it comes to diseases prevention. Immunization has been successful throughout the years being able to control deadly diseases such as smallpox, as well as poliomyelitis among others across the nation. Through measles immunization, then individuals and the whole city, as well as the nation, would be assured of safety thus no outbreak case.

Many diseases which are untreatable have posed a major threat to the humankind ever since, and the only way they can be managed and mitigated is through mandatory vaccination. The fact that measles was able to spread in the state and even out of the state is a clear indication that many children have not been getting measles vaccination. It is so disappointing that in this era where education is not for the chosen few, but for all, an individual can think otherwise of the best protective measure there is against measles.

Based on this event, a lot can be learned from it. There are thousands of diseases which are beyond the human capacity to come up with the appropriate medication to cure them and therefore in order to prevent them and reduce their severity, vaccines have been made to ensure that the diseases never cause harm to a person. Basing on the understanding of the benefits of immunization with reference to smallpox, rubella, and poliomyelitis among others, it is most important to prevent rather than waiting for the cure which might take time before it is established (Pickering et al., 2009).

The CSWE (Council on Social Work Education) commands that social work learners develop values, skills and knowledge as a part of the critical capabilities of their specialized training. A core competency of the CSWE is “to enhance human well-being and help meet the basic human needs of all people, with particular attention to the needs and empowerment of people who are vulnerable, oppressed, and living in poverty” (Davis & Reber, 2016).

Measles is one of the many highly contagious diseases which have no cure and therefore to curb its effects immunization against it is key. Through administering vaccination, measles can be mitigated thus ensuring zero cases of the disease. Therefore, prevention is better than cure.
