Many questions have been raised on whether physicians should assist terminally ill patients in ending their lives. It has caused a lot of controversy and division in views. Religious views indicate that voluntary ending of life is against God’s purpose for life; however, human rights activists question the purpose of living in pain and anguish while they have the right over control of their lives. Euthanasia should be made legal in the interests of the individual’s wishes to relieve themselves and their loved ones pain and suffering.

Firstly, every individual has the right to control whatever happens with their body and their life since the right to die should a matter of personal choice (Bada & Chaturvedi, 2013) . In life, people have freedom to control aspects such as whom they marry or what kind of work they do. In that regard, one should be granted control of their life and whether to end it.

Some of the patients who opt for medically assisted suicide recognize the burden they place on their relatives. Some of the bills and life sacrifices to help the ailing person can lead to emotional trauma and loss of concentration on personal life (Miedema, 2014) . Medical bills usually sum up to high amounts when it comes to cases where a patient is placed in the ICU or in vegetative state where all bodily functions such as feeding and breathing are done through the use of machines. Medically assisted suicide can help in lifting this burden allowing the family to focus on other financial issues.

Medically assisted suicide allows one to die with dignity. Death is slow and painful, especially when it involves a terminal disease that slowly kills a person (Niekerk, 2016) . This indicates the need to free one from the anguish of dying in pain rather than forcing them to continue suffering. Terminal suffering denies the patient the right to live with dignity since some medical conditions are painful and unnecessarily prolonged (Niekerk, 2016) . Too much pressure is placed on patients who have slim chances of recovering and may be nearing their end. In view of this argument, medically assisted deaths cease to appear inhumane, but are deemed as a way of freeing a person from too much suffering.

In overall, euthanasia should be legalized since as seen above, it adversely affects the ill patient and their family. Pain and suffering is against human rights. In that sense, individuals should be allowed to decide on what should happen with their lives.
