A mental disorder is a situation that is characterized by strange belief, behavior, and feelings. Defining normal behavior is, however, subjective and varies widely depending on the prevailing situation, place, time, and culture of the individual. To assess abnormal behavior, a variety of measures are used, they may include: behavioral assessment, physiological monitoring, and clinical interviews.

Medical practitioners believe that mental disorder is caused by physiological and biological factors which can be diagnosed and hospitalized. According to medical perspectives, the use of drugs as a form of treatment is ideal rather than psychological examination. Psycho dynamist, on the other hand, claims that mental disorder is as a result of anxiety that is produced by insensible and unresolved conflicts. According to this perspective, the preferred treatment of the psychological disorder is recognition and mitigation of the conflicts. Cognitive perspective, however, relates abnormal behavior to the consequence of people believing in particular opinion and actions that are based on counterfeit hypothesis. Cognitive perspective recommends rehabilitation as a way of resolving mental disorder since therapy helps in unlearning the false assumptions and replaces them with useful thoughts. Abnormal behavior can also be related to the background of the individual. Abnormal behavior can be learned from the family, community, and, culture of the said, individual.

From the discussion, I learned that labeling a person as normal or abnormal may have a harmful emotional effect on them. In reality, words are more powerful, and when individuals are frequently told that they are normal or abnormal, their self-esteem is affected. The person that is labeled as normal may feel superior therefore developing a superiority complex over others while the person that is labeled as abnormal may feel inferior hence lowering their self-esteem. Labeling will not only affect the individual self-esteem but also emotionally.

Depression, mood, panic, anxiety and, stress were identified as some of the common mental disorder in the workplace. In many organizations, employees experiencing these mental disorders are associated with low productivity. These employees are subjected to stigmatization which normally worsens the condition instead of resolving it. The other employees and the employer may consider these individuals as an outcast and may not take the appropriate measures that are required to mitigate the matter hence lowering the self-esteem of the affected person. However, to help employees improve their productivity and to improve the productivity of the organization, initial steps of identifying the cause of the abnormal behavior should be put in place. If the condition cannot be solved by the other employees and the available recourses, an outside expert will be required to solve the issue.

Historically, the mental disorder was associated with being posed with spirits. The established views of early on documented history indicated that abnormal behavior was as a result of the intervention of supernatural forces and demonic possession, therefore, leading to primordial treatment practices such as trepanning. In the Old Testament, sin was regarded as a cause of mental disorder. The ancient Hindus society associated abnormal behavior to witchcraft and sorcery. In the middle age period, evil spirits were believed to be the main cause of mental illnesses. The mitigating factors that were used as remedies included cutting an opening in the skin to let loose the demon, purges, bloodletting, and whipping.

In conclusion, abnormal behavior is common to individuals in the workplace, and appropriate resolutions should be taken to avoid the fatal consequences that are associated with it. Both employers and employees of an organization should be educated on the myths and misconceptions about mental illness, therefore, reducing stigmatization faced with people diagnosed with mental illness. Person research on the topic of study would have additional yield information that is vital for assessing abnormal behavior in the workplace.
