What are your reactions to this documentary? Did you have an emotional reaction to it?
I find the document interesting and sad at the same time. I have achieved and discovered a lot about the social media effects especially on younger women who are yet to discover their potential. I only hear stories of how various ladies commit suicide and even go to extreme ends just to satisfy the society. It is sad that the young people, who we expect to be the future leaders of the world, end up making poor decisions in life due to low self-esteem promoted by the media. It is sad that women are used in the marketing industry, so as to sell products. The idea of portraying women and how they are expected to be; the bodies they should have, the smooth skin, brown color, slim, dark, long hair is unexpected of the media. I was emotional when the young ladies expressed their feelings and what the media and even the people made them feel about themselves. It is sad that people cannot accept their imperfect selves, and even harder because the world uses the imperfections against them.
Why is it important that we teach people how to be media literate?
It is important that people are taught on how to be media literate. The media affects many people psychologically and even emotionally. Media shows us what is expected of us, the good, the bad, the accepted and the unaccepted things in the society, which is wrong. Some of the things that the media makes one believe are always unrealistic and unreal. Therefore, people should be taught to understand media as a way of selling products, promoting a business, and making a living. They should understand that their self-esteem is more important and the media should not change it in anyway.
