Assessment of children is a lot trickier especially if they are not from the same culture as the test makers. If the culture of the child is known then the teacher can be able to assess the competence of the child. Preschool experiences and knowledge that children receive should not be taken for granted because they contribute to how they respond to questions asked. Accurately and keenly monitoring and assessment of children is the understanding and knowledge of the process of their thoughts that will notify tutoring beyond any answer slip. It further means being capable to go deeper into their discerning, to understand not only the incorrectness or correctness of a response but the thinking that resulted to it. Delpit (141) states that teachers can achieve this by being very clear about what is to be assessed and learnt. They can also use assessments to evaluate the effectiveness of a lesson and make adjustments that are constructive using the results obtained. Children can be made to write regularly and clearly and carefully teaching the criteria that the work of students will be evaluated or scored. Just as students can be assessed teachers should also be assessed.

The drive for excellence is achieved through practice and determination. Excellence is also based on a combination of cultural environment, drive and innate ability. Practice is important because it enables individuals to perfect their skills. The brain can also be molded as a result of drive and practice. Sharing, looking out for others and nurturing is considered a cultural strength which can be built upon by various schools. Excellence can also be achieved through the selection of right reading materials enable teachers to connect with students such as African American adolescents. The literacy advancement among males who are African American has been linked to greater essences such as economic and intellectual development and resistance to subjugation. Must-read texts are exciting for tutors and students alike because they challenge the students cognitively and enable students to apply the acquired literacy strategies and skills independently. One such strategy is the Urban Prep Charter Academy’s Instructional Theory of Action that details the beliefs of teachers regarding their work. One such description is taking responsibility for tutoring and engaging young men in the learning process regardless of their state (Delpit, 163).

African American students have a tough journey through school whether in a white dominated school or a black dominated school. Some of the students feel invisible and not seen in new environments and their presence would not be acknowledged in positive ways. Another challenge that they face is hyper-visibility especially if more than one of them is in one place at the same time. The reality revealed in such cases in the stigmatization and devaluing of the African American students. They are insulted daily because of the skin color. The rate of completion of campus for black students is 20% point lower than the rate of white students (Delpit, 177). This is attributed to unavailability of resources, poor schools and family issues that have been influenced by poverty. The discrimination and segregation that they face can be dealt with through welcoming where they are valued in spite of their color. Also by creating an environment that is welcoming ensures that racial complaints are addressed and corrections are done. Inclusion of other cultures in campuses such as the African American culture is also important.

The purpose of helping is to ensure that those who have been helped continue to help others. When helping the victims, one has to be courageous and determined. Activists face a lot of challenges and remaining strong in the midst of it all is important so that they keep fighting for what they believe in. Delpit (193) mentions Bob Moses who is the founder of the Algebra Project as one such person who still exudes confidence and courage in his endeavors. It is because of this that he has been able to help many students who have been failed by the education system. Learning humility is also important because through humility people are able to learn how to find a common ground and create a better reality for everyone. Looking and listening for who is missing is also significant. This is because by identifying and including persons or cultures that are missing during meetings or seminars builds unity and fosters love. This will lead to a better environment in our institutions of higher learning.
