I have always loved food, and when I get the chance to indulge, I will not hesitate. This love for food gets me to the kitchen making various types of meals and trying out new recipes. I recently got a nasty encounter with food which I am afraid may result in a reconsideration of the love I once held for food. I got the opportunity to attend a family friend’s wedding a few weeks back, and I was happy about the decision they had made. As normal, the couple had hired caterers who prepared food for their guests. When the official ceremony was done, we were all invited for the evening meal, which I admitted looked extremely sumptuous from the presentation. As usual, I was ready to indulge because I knew the food would be delicious from how it looked.

Undoubtedly, the food was delicious, and I appreciated the different tastes that came with the serving. I left the ceremony a happy man because of how tasty the food was and the entire success of the celebration. Things took a different turn the same night when I started experiencing slight stomach pains. I would ignore these pains as nothing because they were not severe, and I knew they would go away with time. I was still full from the food I had eaten throughout the day and therefore did not eat anything while at home. I experienced this slight pain for close to an hour, and it is then that I noticed the pin gradually increasing. It became slightly more painful with every hour and reached a point where it was not manageable. I was now experiencing the pains as cramping and in intervals. The extreme pain would come for close to a minute during which I would need to leave anything I was attending to and bend down to make it a little less painful.

It was a few minutes past midnight, a few hours after I had left the wedding. I could feel my stomach grumbling, and the pain was now accompanied by diarrhea. I had experienced loose stool from the onset of the pain and would need to use the washroom sparingly. However, as the pain increased, the frequency of the loose stool also increased. Whenever I got the pain, I would get the urge to use the toilet, which I needed to run to. I would stay in there for close to five minutes to ensure that I was done. I also started experiencing nausea, which was not accompanied by vomiting. I was in so much pain, and I had used the washroom numerous times, which caught the attention of my parents. My mother came to check on me and was inquisitive of what was happening.

I explained to her how I was feeling and everything that had happened since we came back home from the wedding. Until then, I had not had any medication because I did not know what to take. My mother noticed that I was in too much pain, and she got some tablets from the medicine cabinet and gave them to me. She explained that they were painkillers and would help manage my pain as we sought medical attention. My mother is often sensitive towards her children’s health, and any slight disturbance would make her worry. By now, the pain was too much to bear, and I curled myself on the floor while holding my stomach. My mother looked concerned as she noticed the extreme pain I was going through.

She helped me off the floor and slowly took me to the car. She drove hastily to the nearest health facility, which luckily was just a few miles away. I was taken in by a nurse and underwent numerous examinations which required that I provide my stool and urine. I was still experiencing loose stool, and the stomach cramping was still there. I was given an injection by the nurse, which she explained would help reduce the pain I was feeling. By now, I had been at the hospital for an hour, and while waiting in the room, the doctor who had earlier attended to me came back in with a file in his hand. He explained that my symptoms and the results from the test that had been carried out indicated that I was suffering from food poisoning.

The doctor explained that I had recently eaten contaminated food, which had resulted in the foodborne illness I was experiencing. My mother was by my side the whole time and explained to the doctor that we had been part of a wedding celebration and were served different types of food. I was given some prescriptions to take in the week, and when the pain had died down, I was allowed to leave. As we reached home, I noticed that the pain was almost gone and the loose stool had reduced significantly. Despite feeling better in the days that followed, my mother made sure that I adhered to the prescription and finished all the medications that I was given. She also informed me that the family friend had received numerous complaints from other attendants that they had suffered food poisoning after eating what had been served. The experience taught me to be more careful when eating at functions, especially food that I do not know how it was prepared. I don’t think I will eat at any other function because I would not handle a similar experience.
