A sword is also propped on the chair with a lion finial on the desk as a representation of Napoleon as the conqueror who is prepared for battle. He wears a blue uniform with red cuffs to represent foot grenadiers of the Imperial Guard which he chooses to signify the solidarity he had for his troops. Below the desk was Plutarch’s volume lives of the Nobel Greeks and Romans which shows Napoleon together with his leaders of the past (Chandler, 2009).
Lastly, the artist plays a significant role in the society. David’s career is seen to have flourished around the era of revolution where there was the gutting of monarchy and the nation of experiencing counter-revolution. It was a time when Napoleon self-appointed himself as the French emperor and monarchy was restored. David plays the role of embodying the rise of neoclassical art where he grounds in the emulating of clean lines that are found in the ancient sculpture. At the same time, he rejected the use of fantastical and decorative rococo style which is seen to symbolize extremism of the French monarchy. The message that is portrayed by David through his art is seen to be contrasting (David & Johnson, 2006). He tries to compare, allegorize ideas and capture events of time that were characterized by grandeur and austerity that was cool. His art is also seen to have cultural significance in the society.
