Narcissism is a sense of overvaluing or thinking highly of oneself and having little or no regard for others. Narcissism is a behavior one develops right from childhood. Based on the reported results from article “Origins of narcissism in children”, I agree with the conclusion reached by the author. First, narcissism among human beings is a reality and therefore it must have a origin. Narcissism signs among adults have been explained by many parents to have originated from their childhood behaviors. The way adults behave is just a reflection of the behaviors they developed during their early ages. Secondly, a child’s way of life is highly influenced by the parent. If a parent becomes overprotective to his or her child then that child might grow to become a narcissist because they only think about themselves. On the other hand, if a child does not receive the needed attention from his or her parent then that child might end up seeking for that attention from outsiders. The power of controlling narcissism in children is in the hands of parents. Children who are brought up with not too high or too little attention and recognition from their parents have shown little or no signs of narcissism.

The values derived from the study give clear information on the causes of narcissism and self-esteem among the children. Children who are overvalued by their parents or receive extra attention and recognition are on a higher risk of becoming narcissists. The values displayed by the diagram suggest that overvaluation leads to narcissism. The study also shows that sowing social acceptance or warmth to children will develop self-esteem on them. Making a child feel accepted from small age creates self-acceptance within the children and this helps them not to develop narcissism. The two values; self-esteem and narcissism, among the children are determined by the parents through the way they associate with them from small age.
