The film illustrates a series of events that took place in 1948 such as the upsurge of the Nationalist party, the destruction of black homes, and how the ANC movement together with other black individuals responded through a strategic nonviolent way. The film also shows the events that took place in 1960 such as the Sharpeville Massacre and how Mandela was arrested and ended up in Robben Island prison.
On June 26, 1961, Mandela wrote a letter, "The struggle is my life," while in the underground. he also said that "I will continue fighting for freedom until the end of my days." This shows how Nelson Mandela was a true personification of the struggles he and other South Africans went through for their country to gain independence freedom. As the film progresses towards the end, it shows that Mandela was released on February 11, 1990, and successfully became the president in 1991 (Pressley-Sanon,2014).
In conclusion, Nelson Mandela is a real example of a leader who fought hard for his country’s independence. He was able to unite the ethnic groups in South Africa. Unfortunately, his quest to fight for freedom of his country affected his marriages negatively. Through his efforts, hardships, and struggles South Africa eventually gained independence freedom. He is celebrated as a vibrant freedom fighter and a liberator hence known as the father of a nation and son of Africa.
