Policy prescription has to consider six criteria for analyzing the impacts of the policy on the public. Rational human beings are always concerned about the ability of the strategy to solve a problem facing society effectively and in an appropriate manner (Vedung, 2017). Out of the six criteria for policy prescription, I find that effectiveness and appropriateness are the most beneficial to be applied in deciding the policy to be used. Effectiveness of a plan is assessed and measured based on the outcome and the value of the plan to be implemented (Dunn, 2015). On the other hand, appropriateness ids concerned with subjectivity and rationality. In effect, appropriateness considers if the policy to be implemented suits the needs of the society or a particular group. Therefore, it is essential for policy implementation criteria to find the possible outcomes of the policy and its suitability to the community.
The effects of effectiveness and appropriateness are witnessed in a situation where the government intends to implement a healthcare policy. In circumstances where the government plans to implement a healthcare policy, its objective is to improve healthcare systems in the country. As a result, there should be a mechanism to ensure that the implemented policy effective and appropriate to address the healthcare needs. Policy effectiveness can be measured by assessing the value of the medical treatment, services and preventive measures created to facilitate improvements in service delivery (Emanuel, Schmidt, & Steinmetz, 2018). From the effectiveness perspective, healthcare policy should be evidence-based or based on implementing approaches that have seen to improve health. Appropriateness would be concerned about the effectiveness of the mechanisms that healthcare is delivered to the patients. The system to be implemented has to meet the needs of the patients and follow the evidence-based guidelines. Therefore, appropriateness occurs if the treatment service is delivered free from errors and misdiagnosis.
