The New Generation Science Standards (NGSS) are goals that observe what a student should do and know. The standards are an improvement to old standards in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The framework strives to provide the necessary foundation for decisions about instruction, assessments, and curriculum. The overall aim is to prepare high school graduates for the rigors of their careers and college by equipping them with skills as critical thinking, problem-solving, and scientific research.

The NGSS prepares students for college and career by equipping them with the core research skills that can later be used to acquire additional scientific information. The education focuses on helping students to select and evaluate reliable sources of information. Career and college ready students can identify multiple research sources, collect data from different directories, and establish the credibility of information (“Appendix C – A Draft Definition of College and Career Readiness in Science”, 2013). Additionally, the framework enables students to apply knowledge flexibly among various disciplines. The standards emphasize that students should make sound arguments on substantive topics and issues by transferring their literacy and mathematics skills to science. Having a rational argument makes it possible for students to express themselves scientifically during college and their careers.

The standards contribute to increased content knowledge and professional skills by enabling students to think critically to and develop the necessary skills to succeed in the modern world. Employers are more likely to hire workers with strong science-based skills and can also actively participate in problem-solving (“New Generation Science Standards”, 2013). Content knowledge increases when the standards enable students to explain scientific phenomena, evaluate scientific inquiry, and interpret evidence and data. The framework also identifies 21st-century skills such as self-direction, self-motivation, persistence, and motivation. All these skills can be used to instill resilience and equip students better for their careers.
