The U.S. Census Bureau Show identified that the populace of New York declined by 126,355 between 2019 and 2020. This massive decline in New York's population has characterized the state's social spheres for the past decade. Research has identified that the drop in population in New York is the highest in the United States. This decline has had economic, political, and social effects on the city's authorities and residents.

New York City is likely to lose two U.S. House seats in 2022 federal reappointments due to population decline. As Spector (2021) highlights, New York will undoubtedly lose one seat, thus dropping the total number to 26 and at risk of losing another if the population decline persists. Losing house seats will affect the city's influence in national governance. The drop will have political benefits to other states such as Florida, Texas, and California since the states might get more U.S. House seats. From July 2019, Florida's population has grown by 241 256, thus widening its gap with New York in the fourth position.

Population decline in New York has driven unemployment rates to above 12%, double the national average. More people have been homeless due to reductions in incomes, thus raising the dependency ratio (Spector, 2021). Public finances have also been adversely affected as small-scale businesses and companies are closing down due to high staff turnover and operation costs. Many Americans point out the high taxation and costs of living and extreme weather as the main reasons for their transitions from New York to other states. New York's governor, Andrew Cuomo, has downplayed the impact of taxation on the population decline and instead pointed out climate changes and demographic realignments as the probable causes.

However, Governor Cuomo explained that the New York State movement had enacted lower income taxes and property-tax cap as response strategies to address the population shift. According to Sherman (2021), New York leaders have resolved to address transport and garbage collection challenges while requesting Washington's financial help to determine the possible financial crisis. In summary, New York's population decline has increased the risk of losing House seats in the 2022 appointments. Also, New York has a higher unemployment rate and less public finances due to the closure of businesses and income loss.
