Communication is an essential aspect of human relationships. Most of the time, communication is usually verbal, however, non-verbal communication usually forms a significant and integral portion of any communication even if it is mostly verbal. There are different kinds of non-verbal cues and behaviors that people respond to on a daily basis. They include facial expressions, postures, eye gaze, gestures, and tone of voice (Cherry, 2019). Non verbal communication can therefore be described as the process of disseminating information without using words that are either in the form of words or written (Nordquist, 2019).

Non verbal communication usually comes naturally and depends on the situation or the circumstance at hand. Personally, I have certain non-verbal cues that I consider as strengths. First, I am good at using gestures and use deliberate pauses to emphasize what I intend to say. The use of these non-verbal cues ensure that I do not have to repeat my message and also makes me a good public speaker. Moreover, my facial expression is always welcoming and this helps in making anyone or any audience that I have feel comfortable while I am talking to them. Unfortunately, besides these cues being advantageous in certain aspects of my life, there are also downsides. For instance, sometimes, non-verbal messages could contradict what I say; I usually have a flat tone that could indicate that I am bored about a certain situation or that I am not in a good mood while the contrary is true.

Non verbal behaviors are usually present in almost every conversation. But I will be paying more attention to not only to myself but also to others is the body language. Body language usually gives out a lot especially when it comes to feelings and attitudes (Cherry, 2019). Therefore, I will pay special attention to my body language so that I am not misinterpreted while at the same time watch other’s body language so that I do not misinterpret them as well.
