Several nations in the world have known nuclear programs that the nations have admitted to being running while others undertake nuclear programs in secret. Apart from the Russian Federation and the United States, the Republic of North Korea has been known to advance the development of nuclear weapons (CIA., n.d). The North Korean leader has advanced the nation’s programs to build nuclear missiles and bombs. Nuclear experts have brought forward varying suggestions on why North Korea is advancing nuclear weapons programs. The rise of the nation’s leader has taken a rather cruel and ruthless path informing the need for him to develop nuclear weapons. Furthermore, distrust of the United States exists which would inform the development of nuclear weapons aimed at deterring possible invasion by the US. Additionally, North Korea may be aiming at having the upper hand in diplomacy as was the case with China in the Cold War period.

The North Korean nuclear weapon programs pose regional as well as global political impact. The nuclear program leaves the United States with an option of employing diplomacy with the country to reduce her nuclear programs (CIA., n.d). Additionally, the program poses political instability to the neighboring countries of Japan, China, and South Korea. Consequently, the three nations are at the center of diplomatic relations with global powers such as the US to make an alliance that will keep North Korea in check.

Testing nuclear weapons has created security shockwaves in Asia especially the Northeast Asia since North Korea is considered the world’s most militarized country (CIA., n.d). Subsequently, the UN Security Council has to keep track of the nuclear programs across the Northeast Asian region to prevent the region’s countries from embarking on nuclear programs through provocation of North Korea.
