Barack Obama is one of the historical leaders with a charismatic and transformational leadership style. First, his ability as a transformational leader was observed during his election campaign slogan (Elkatawneh, 2016). For instance, in 2012, he used a slogan, “forward” aiming at continued success despite challenges such as economic recession and high rates of unemployment. During this term, Obama’s government managed to reduce unemployment rates by half because these rates fell from 10% in 2010 to 5% in 2014 (Elkatawneh, 2016). As a transformational leader, Obama was a representative of hope and change in the United States. Even when he was serving in the Senate, he significantly changed behaviors and attitudes of the western countries towards people of color (Whitwell, 2014). As the president, he enacted one of the most progressive healthcare reforms to provide the Americans to choose their healthcare plans. He also demonstrated a strong desire to achieve social justice and changes.
Obama has been celebrated as a transformational leader even, outside the United States. His presidential campaigns fascinated many people across the globe (Green & Roberts, 2012). Secondly, his charismatic nature portrayed him as a leader who would facilitate the changes needed by the current generation. Possibly, this is one of the characteristics that influenced some conservatives and independents to vote for him (Green & Roberts, 2012). His inauguration was also historic, and it indicated that he had demonstrated the power to influence his followers. On a further note, Obama proved his ability to communicate high expectations and expressing confidence among his followers. When delivering his acceptance speech, Obama remarked that it’s a new dawn for American leadership (Coggins, 2009). In this way, he inspired his followers that he would bring in a new kind of leadership in America. President Obama proved his ability to take decisive actions and ambitious agendas.
