Online Platforms Provide Young People an Avenue to Engage in Noble Causes

Introduction

The internet, through social media, has changed the essence of humanity and the livelihood of many people. Being the pivotal force towards the force of globalization, the internet has allowed like-minded people from different backgrounds to connect and share information together. Social media have presented the opportunity for social groups to be formed virtually, where people can come together to see to it that certain causes are put to action. For example, in the past centuries, when the internet was nothing more than a foreign term only heard of by tech-specialists, human beings would be pressed by the urge to unite and engage in collective action. Conventional means of communication, such as telegrams, messengers, telephone calls, and postal mails would be used to keep groups that rally for a common cause together. These conventional media could be best described as slow, less convenient and hectic. However, with modern technology, specifically through online platforms, information can be channeled faster than the blink of an eye to allow for more effective collective action. One of the purposes of social collective action is to ensure that positive outcomes are materialized, and inspires the goal of this essay, which is to discuss how online platforms can provide the avenue through which young people and teenagers can engage in noble causes.

Alleviate Loneliness and Isolation

Given the unlimited freedom for people to do absolutely anything they can think about in the internet, there also exist numerous positive outcomes which people can be part of in the same virtual world. One of the noble causes which young people and teenagers can engage in online is through participating in support groups. In the modern internet-crazed world, there is an increasing number of people who report being lonely, and others with unique personal qualities may feel isolated in their environment. Such people can no longer continue feeling lonely and isolated because of the presence of virtual support groups which they can easily be welcome. In these online support groups, young people and teenagers communicate with one another, keeping each other company and even making virtual friends as a way of doing away with loneliness. For example, online platforms such as the Sony PlayStation Network has allowed many young people to interact through online gaming, and even form meaningful social connections which have alleviated the feeling of loneliness in a larger population. Also aforementioned, like-minded people can form groups in online platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and Reddit as a way to create a virtual home for young adults to develop the feeling of belonging and acceptance (Diaz, 2020) . These virtual pages include teens with common interests and diverse personalities so that they can avoid feeling marginalized.

Promoting Online Businesses

Young people and teens can participate in the promotion of small online-based businesses. In most cases, these businesses are in their start-up phase and it is noble for young people to participate in the process of developing them. The present-day economy imparts so much pressure on the old and young alike, and as a result, many young people have set up their own businesses, and have identified online platforms as the suitable base to establish their brands. It would be noble for young people and teens to help promote businesses developed and run by their peers because, one day in the future, they could turn out to become multi-million-dollar organizations geared towards changing the face of human living. Additionally, by helping promote businesses run by their peers, young people can acquire a sense of being part of something greater than themselves.

Supporting Each Other’s Talents

Apart from promoting businesses, young people and teens can engage in noble causes by forming online social groups to support each other’s talents. There are many people born with remarkable talents and it would not hurt a nerve to pay support for the unique natural gifts they are endowed with. Having recognized that some of their friends possess certain talents, it would be noble to join or open an online group of supporters or even young fans to help them gain more confidence in themselves, and hopefully develop a career out of their talent. For example, at a young age of 16 years old, Chris Brown had a huge online fanbase mainly consisting of young people. Today, Chris Brown is a highly popular Rhythm and Blues singer and producer with an even larger number of fans than before (Singleton, 2020) . Justin Beiber is also another artist who at a young age, accumulated a social support from fans in online platforms who would call themselves the ‘Beliebers.’ As a result, Justin Beiber grew and blossomed into one of the world most famous and celebrated artists, owing regards to support from young and loyal fans for his talent.

Engaging in Legal File-sharing

Additionally, young people and teens can demonstrate noble causes by engaging in legal means of file-sharing. In the previous years, before the internet became more regulated, the work of many artists and producers, such artists, book authors, film directors, and content developers would be leaked in various internet sources and they could be acquired illegally by anyone who may have had the need. Many people, including the young and teens, would engage in such downloads, and the adverse effect would be that the artists would not receive the necessary credit and worth for their copyrighted works (Holt, Cale, Leclerce, & Drew, 2020) . However, following intervention from relevant federal agencies, file-sharing became more regulated. A noble act from the young and teens would be to access these media files in legitimate ways, such as subscribing to online music and videos platforms, like YouTube, Tidal, Spotify, and Apple Music.

Conclusion

To conclude, there are numerous ways in which young people and teens can engage in noble causes in the internet. Some of the ways they can show noble acts, as discussed in this essay are by; being part of groups of like-minded individuals to alleviate loneliness and isolation; promoting small online-based businesses; supporting young talent, and; engaging in legal file-sharing activities. Through these activities, young people and teens can illustrate noble causes in action, and contribute towards building a better society.
