The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulatory standards and consensus standards are the safety programs developed by organizations to comply with the workplace and safety requirements. Although the two share the common objective of ensuring the safety of individuals at workplaces, they have some significant differences that make them differ from one another.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is a governmental agency created with a mission to assure that there is a safe working condition for all the employees. However, the regulations established by bodies such as the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) does not have enforcement aspect of the laws. Another common difference is that OSHA rules are established as the general framework that applies to many organizations. In essence, the OSHA laws are developed standards that help guard against hazards in a workplace setting. It applies to organizations working under different conditions and situations. This is contrary to the ANSI laws which are unique to a given organizational settings and provides detailed technical applications that are not provided by OSHA.
