The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulatory standards and consensus standards are the safety programs developed by organizations to comply with the workplace and safety requirements. Although the two share the common objective of ensuring the safety of individuals at workplaces, they have some significant differences that make them differ from one another.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is a governmental agency created with a mission to assure that there is a safe working condition for all the employees. On the other hand, the census standards are developed by various organizations as opposed to the government to ensure the safety of the employees. However, the regulations established by bodies such as the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) does not have enforcement aspect of the laws. Another common difference is that OSHA rules are established as the general framework that applies to many organizations. In essence, the OSHA laws are developed standards that help guard against hazards in a workplace setting. It applies to organizations working under different conditions and situations. This is contrary to the ANSI laws which are unique to a given organizational settings and provides detailed technical applications that are not provided by OSHA. In fact, ANSI rules can be tailored to address the individual needs of organizations or private groups.

The extent of enforcement can analyze the requirements of OSHA and Consensus. It is worth to note that OSHA laws and the standards set by the government are mandatory to all employees and organizations. Firms with the country are supposed to observe these set of rules to avoid prosecutions due to lack of compliance. In contrary, ANSI standards are voluntary since they are established by private groups consisting of policy makers, technical experts, and industry representatives. Since they are not governmental organizations, they have no authority to force the employees to adhere to the regulations.

The standard that has a priority in occupational settings is the Consensus standards. Ideally, Consensus standards are established to meet the dynamic needs of organizations as opposed to OSHA which just offers a general framework. Since various organizations have different needs, it is important that they develop the safety standards that are per OSHA laws but created in a way to ensure that safety of their employees.
