Pursuing a career in law enforcement necessitates the need for an officer to have well stipulated career goals. This offers the benefit of providing impetus and motivation for the officer to meet both the operational and the organizational demands of the job. It suffices to affirm the fundamental duty of a law enforcement officer can be summed as to offer service to mankind through safeguarding lives and property, protecting the innocent against deception, the weak against oppression or intimidation, and the peaceful against violence or disorder; and to respect the Constitutional Rights of all men to liberty and equality (Dunham & Alpert, 2015). It is in this regard that I have the following personal career goals as I look forward to joining the Police Academy.
Serving my country is the overarching goal that I intend to pursue while training and working as a law enforcement officer. I am currently an active duty soldier on combat deployment to Afghanistan. This experience has offered me an opportunity to serve my country through working with the military. It is in line with this that I know that pursuing a career in law enforcement will provide me with chance to serve my nation locally. Secondly, I have a goal of putting effort in whatever department I will be working in with an intent of rising up the ranks. I have an eventual goal of becoming a lieutenant. I have particular interest in detectives and I look forward to discharging my duties with utmost diligence if given an opportunity to serve in that department. Finally, I am a firm believer in the concept that mentorship is fundamental in preparing future generations to make the society a better place especially among law enforcers (Dunham & Alpert, 2015). Accordingly, offering leadership and mentorship to the officers who will be working under my supervision is yet another goal that I have while looking forward to joining the profession. As such, I believe that the above personal goals will put me at a good vantage point to discharge my duties diligently as a law enforcement officer.
