Generally speaking, it is vital for a leader to develop a personal leadership development plan. To put it more simply, an effective leader must have a good plan for prosperity. The plan often includes an individual growth plan and professional plan for enhancement. In this regard, this paper seeks to examine my notable strengths and weaknesses as a leader and identify the skills, practices, and principles of leadership that I will utilize to become a good leader. In addition, this paper will mainly identify my significant areas of improvement. Overall, the aftermath will be an inclusive self-leadership development plan that I will utilize to grow myself and any company that I will work for.
Notably, my strengths are; I have excellent skills in communication, excellent conflict resolution skills, I am mindful of myself and those around me, and I can make difficult or courageous decisions. Firstly, since I have excellent communication skills, I may have no troubles explaining organization policies to clients, and it is easier for me to answer their queries concerning our products or services. Additionally, effective communication will aid me in fostering a proper working relationship between myself and employees, thus improving efficiency and morale.

Secondly, having good conflict resolutions skills will enable me to foster stronger relationships in the workplace. This is because I can decipher conflicts promptly thus individuals can solve their problems which can assist in building their relationships. Further, I believe that I will be able to reduce tensions in the work environment because of my conflict resolution skills. Hence, increasing morale in the organization that I will work for in the future. Thirdly, being mindful will help me in nurturing a passion for my work and feelings of compassion for other people as well as developing the capacity to empower individuals in the organization that I will work for. Last but not least, being able to make difficult decisions will enable me to make effective decisions in an organization thereby improving the productivity of the company.
Despite my previously mentioned strengths, I also have weaknesses that I need to work on. To begin with, I have poor time management skills. I find it difficult to organize my time well which usually affects my overall performance. At the same time, I am always late in completing my scheduled tasks. Second, I do not like receiving feedback from the people around me. In most cases, I am ordinarily afraid that receiving constructive feedback from others will demoralize me. Therefore, I continuously avoid asking for feedback from others.
Ideally, I plan to employ six strategies that will help me become an effective leader. Firstly, adopting the approach or skill of self-goal setting is essential in business. Herein, I will determine what effective behavior is and henceforth set particular goals for my behavior. Also, I will determine what my desired result is or how effective behaviors look like. During the process of pursuing goals, I will concentrate more on a model that appears to be more attractive, prestigious or competent than others (Alves, Lovelace, Manz, & Toyasaki, 2006). More specifically, I will set goals that are viewed as short-run objectives together with long-term pursuits and ultimately, the goals will be Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Time-bound (SMART). It is important to note that setting challenging goals heightens performance; therefore, I plan to set specific and challenging goals.
Secondly, I plan to utilize the strategy of self-rewards. I will reward myself whenever I engage in desirable behaviors. In essence, I will award myself when I adhere to my plan and schedule, for example, I can choose to reward myself with a vacation or even a good expensive pair of shoe; this can, in turn, stimulate desired behavior, therefore, enabling me to perform better in an organization. Thirdly, the strategy of self-punishment is also vital. I plan to punish myself whenever I engage in undesirable behaviors. In other words, I intend to punish myself when I fail to follow my scheduled plans. This will consequently encourage self-discipline.
Fourthly, I plan to focus on a decrease of negative self-talk and dysfunctional beliefs which will consequently encourage me to think positively. In view of this, I intend to replace negative thoughts with positive self-talk (Alves, Lovelace, Manz, & Toyasaki, 2006). This will primarily include picturing myself successfully performing a demanding task, often called mental imaginary. For the most part, mental imaginary has the power to influence performance positively. Fifthly, I plan to pay more attention to enhancing enjoyable tasks. I will search for activities that I enjoy and then reinforce these enjoyable activities. In addition, I will adjust my job by giving the activities that I enjoy a more significant share of my workday. Lastly, I intend to focus on these enjoyable tasks which will consequently increase my feelings of self-determination and competence.
Typically, I need to improve my time management skills and how I view feedback to become an effective leader. Herein, I plan to identify my priorities and then plan my time in a way that can enable me to achieve them. Further delegating authority to others will also help me manage my time effectively as I will have enough time to concentrate on my priorities. In addition to time management, I plan to give my subordinates timely and constructive feedback (Kaplan, 2015). At the same time, I plan to constantly ask for constructive feedback from others and act on it to improve my performance. Equally, I will be able to build trust and lay a framework for a channel of honest and constructive feedback.
Overall, it is crucial for a leader to develop a self-leadership development plan as effective leader should have a good plan of prosperity. This paper has remarkably identified my strengths, weaknesses and the strategies that I plan to use to enhance my leadership skills. Additionally, it has identified my areas of improvement. Therefore, developing a self-leadership development plan is of essence as one has the opportunity to examine his or her strengths, weaknesses and the strategies that he or she plans to use to become an effective leader.
