Pornography is the portrayal of explicit sexual content on various media platforms. Notably, pornography is created for the sole purpose of arousing users or viewers sexually. When coming up with a contemporary definition of pornography, the challenge is on establishing the line where sexual context is explicit enough to be regarded as pornography. Indeed, there is a lot of sexual material and content that exists in the media and other avenues. However, on a definitive contemporary basis, it is not easy to establish the actual graphic ‘threshold’ that sexual content has to achieve for it to be considered pornography.

The main difference between erotica and pornography is the explicit level and the intention each has. For pornography, the content is explicit, and the sole purpose is arousal. In the case of erotica, the material is not explicit since it can take the form of artistic creations that view sexual ecstasy as an art as opposed to a tool of arousal (Kammeyer, 2008). Therefore, erotica and pornography are differentiated by the level of detail and the purpose each has. The law should thus regulate the dissemination of such content to non-adults. For adults, it is hard to impose control since they have the power and ability to fetch such material from whichever avenue they deem fit. However, regulations can be imposed on the creation of pornography as opposed to dissemination.

If adults held the right to possess any type of pornographic material for personal use, the cost of such a right would be moral erosion and predisposition of children to sexual content. The “pornification” of mainstream culture is the surge in mainstream trends where sex is portrayed as a cool thing that a person can even boast about. It ranges from actual sexual acts to nudity, and pornographic material. The relationship between technology and pornographic materials is in the way technology promotes the consumption of pornography. Through the internet, technology has created the most accessible and lucrative platform for people to post and view pornographic material.
