Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a disorder that causes incapacitating anxiety after a traumatic event such as traffic accident. Many people especially veterans often suffer from PTSD. According to Rosenthal (2011) approximately one million veterans suffer PTSD because of the exposure to violence on the battle field while serving the country. PTSD can be overwhelming to the body. Most veterans are affected by these memories because they relieve them every day in nightmares or flashback causing most of them to commit suicide or have suicidal thoughts. It is astonishing that most veterans die from suicide than they die in combat.
PTSD can be treated by various medication including anxiety and depression medication, therapy, and individual or group counselling among others. However, it has been found that most of these techniques do not actually help because most veterans continue to feel a sense of hopeless despite the treatment. Meditation has been determined as one of the method of treating PTSD symptoms. Transcendental meditation technique a practice for reducing stress that has been proved to be effective in treating PTSD. It has been found to provide hope, reducing anxiety as well as sleepiness nights. It has the ability to quiet down the negative response thereby helping to eliminate the suicidal thoughts, anxiety, and depression and make them better ( Transcendental Meditation, 2014).

Transcendental meditation is effective because it is simple, natural in that there is no aspect of suggestion or manipulation, and it is effortless in that it involves controlling the mind or concentration that helps to clear thoughts of mind. It is practiced 20 minutes twice a day sitting comfortable in chair, which can be done anywhere. It is different from other types of medication because it provides some inner calm, focus, peace, happiness, and inspiration ( Transcendental Meditation, 2014).
I have learned that transcendental meditation provides an individual’s body with the state of rest and relaxation in many regards that allows elimination of the buildup of stress, fatigue, anxiety, and tension. It allows the body to repair itself and makes a person feel better. Therefore, the use of this method on veterans suffering with PTSD will help them to improve their healing and health.
