The fact that unmarried women are having problems being the sole providers for their families in Tacoma is quite common all over the world. Majority of the worlds poor are women, the incidence of poverty, however, differs by age, marital status, household compositions, and other factors. According to Weiss (2009), women are more likely to face poverty than men even in better economic times. Unmarried women have an even higher poverty rate than married women; poverty rates for unmarried women of color are even higher. The loss of a husband in a household increases the family’s likelihood of falling into poverty. In most countries, women are paid less than men even when they both have similar qualifications, and this creates a considerable wage gap. Also, in separated families, women are more likely to bear the cost of raising children. With reference to Cawthorne (2008), eight out of ten custodial parents are women, and custodial mothers are twice as likely to be poor compared to custodial fathers. The reasons why many single mothers live under the poverty line include the facts that women spend more time providing unpaid caregiving than men and that women are segregated into low paying occupations.
One primary key to poverty alleviation is in convincing people that they will benefit from empowering women. Women have been for years seen as the weaker gender, and this highly reflects in the world’s poverty levels. There are many ways that the government of The United States can assist unmarried women with children. Some of these include increasing programs that offer subsidies to pay basic expenses and purchase groceries, issuing of hardship grants for single women, reduction of the tax credit to support childcare and offering programs to help single mothers learn and improve skills.
