To define influence as the leaders' ability to inspire people into making deliberate decisions, accepting failure, and starting over with an enhanced awareness of the problem is accurate. Influence, whether in an institutional setting or political platform, calls for motivation, not only to succeed but also to overcome obstacles on the way to success. The definition portrays influence in two aspects. In one aspect, a leader's influence references their ability to come up with new ideas to inspire change in a targeted area. The leader will then motivate the followers to take calculated risks as they work towards realizing the conceived idea ( Howell & Wanasika, 2018).  In the another aspect, a leader's influence referencesr their ability to offer solace in times of difficulties ( Howell & Wanasika, 2018).  Challenges are inevitable in any endeavor, and people will always need help from a higher authority ein order to bounce back from a drawback. Therefore, whether the problems are personal or interpersonal, leaders' influence will come into play as they help the followers take on these challenges head-on.

The definition of power as the effort of leaders to seek control and abuse their influence is not overly accurate. Power, especially in the military context, does involve the capacity to control resources by defining what subordinates can and cannot do ( Nabers 64) . There are numerous ways of exercising power to control the decisions of the subordinates-some are effective, but others tend to go overboard. To exert power on a group of people, a leader must have an authority granted by set of agreed-upon principles. A leader whose control is exercised within the bounds of these principles is seen as legitimately in power. Only when the leaders' decisions, actions, or commands exceed the authority granted to them do they abuse their influence. Therefore, the judgment that the abuse of influence accompanies power is partly inaccurate.
