Darlene Monda is a clinician who runs a clinic at NYU that specializes in transgender population. The primary objective of her clinic is to offer help to the transgender community in acquiring the desired voice while transitioning to their authentic sex. The main motivation behind this is the fact the world is going to experience a shift in its population’s identity, and more people are expressing their desire to be of the opposite sex. Furthermore, I have a friend who is supposed to be undergoing surgery before December and it is my hope that I will learn a lot when taking him through his journey. Offering therapy to the transgender population is the least that people can offer as we help them get in touch with their desired authentic sex. I want to be a clinician who will be physically and psychologically prepared to attend to the needs of this population, as I believe it is increasingly growing.
The second faculty member who interests me is Tara McAllister Byun, who runs a clinic that utilizes audio/visual feedback to assist patients undergoing therapy, understand what they are doing and learning. The type of treatment can also be applied to patients both adults and children who are suffering from speech disorders. This is important to me because I am currently taking an online software engineering program and upon completing the course, it is my intention to create my auditory software that can be incorporated in clinics worldwide. The experience gained after working with McAllister will be important in future especially when developing my software. Many people who are also transitioning want to change their voices to match the physical body they want it is essential to grant them this wish since it is their constitutional right and also because they are human. Gaining knowledge from this two professional will be helpful to my studies as I long to be of help to this population.
