One of the fundamental mandates of the US government is to keep Americans secure. In its effort to fulfill this mandate, the government has adopted a number of measures that include mass surveillance. These measures have sparked a debate regarding the balance between the rights of the American people and the need to secure the country. Jesse Ventura added his voice to this debate. He held that as part of its security policy, the government had developed a plan to carry out mass surveillance and round up innocent Americans. He further alleged that through FEMA, the government had set up fusion centers where Americans would be held and subjected to inhumane conditions (Smith, 2010).
Before exploring Ventura’s comments, it is important to begin by examining his character and history. Ventura is known for coming up with conspiracy theories (Smith, 2011). Most of these theories are baseless and only intended to cause panic and mistrust of the government. It is therefore not surprising that he created another conspiracy theory. He alleged that the US government had made plans to spy on and imprison Americans who have committed no crimes. Ventura’s allegations are not just empty exaggerations. They are an insult to the intelligence of the American people. Ventura clearly fails to understand that there is due process in the US. Before someone is sent to prison, they are offered the opportunity to defend themselves. Furthermore, there are such provisions as trial by jury in the American constitution. These provisions ensure that no American suffers injustice.

Another indication that Ventura is struggling with over-exaggeration is his assumption that the American people would just allow the government to set up and operate the fusion centers. If what he says about these centers is true, then the government should expect mass protests. The American people would never allow the government to round up and imprison citizens who have done no wrong. The comments that Ventura made regarding the fusion centers are simply another of his conspiracy theories. They should be dismissed with prejudice.
