There are numerous advantages that a PLC system holds when compared to that of electromagnetic relays. In this paper, some advantages of the PLC system will be discussed. The paper will also delve into the limitations of the PLC systems over the electromagnetic relays.

Advantages

Reliability

The PLC’s internal relay system is solid state meaning that the relay function is not mechanical like conventional relay systems. The solid-state type relays incorporated in the PLC system also does not wear out faster. This makes the PLC systems very reliable in operation (Zephyr, 2017).

Ease of Troubleshooting

It is easier to read through the programming as well as find out what is functioning and what isn’t in a PLC system compared to the electromagnetic relay system. This is because the electromagnetic relay systems have no intelligence.

Ease of Expandability

One of the most important features that the PLC system has over the electromagnetic relays is easily expandability and versatility with the programming. For instance, if you want to add a timer in the PLC system to make a motor turn after a specific duration of time, you can add it to the program and set the time (Narkhede, n.d.). But for relay systems, an entirely new component ought to be added.

Smaller Size

Compared to the electromagnetic relays, the physical size requirement of a PLC system is much smaller (Zephyr, 2017).

Limitations

PLC systems have difficulties with some Smart Devices since they were designed for Relay Logic Ladder (Narkhede, n.d.).

Some Optional Modules ought to be added to maximize the performance as well as the flexibility of a PLC system (Narkhede, n.d.).

The bottom line is that the PLC systems are much superior compared to electromagnetic relay systems. Thus, upgrading the relays systems with a PLC is system makes good sense. This is because they are cost-effective, reliable, and easy to troubleshoot.
