Psychologically, the identity crisis makes teenagers fail in achieving their ego identity (Sharma & Mittal, 2017). Identity cohesion vs. role confusion is the psychosocial development stage in which identity crisis may take place, and teenagers experience sexual maturity, physical growth, and idea integration about themselves and what others think about them during this particular stage (Risas, 2020). Teenagers tend to form their self-image and endure the crisis resolution of their primary ego identity (Côté, 2018).

According to Healthline (2020), identity is a hybrid concept that provides a continuity sense and a frame of differentiating self and others to enable one to function autonomously. Teenagers face an intense identity crisis because, at their age, they undergo significant and confusing changes such as the raging of hormones and puberty changes (Hammond Psychology & Associates, 2020). Besides, an increasing juvenile delinquency level in the world is evidence of unsuccessful identity development in teenagers (Hasanah et al., 2019).

Several teenagers experience an identity crisis because of their upbringing.  This study aims to manage identity  crises among these teenagers who have passed through mental and emotional problems from their childhood. It will shed light on the role that metacognitive abilities play in managing this problem among teenagers. An article by Healthline (2020) states that identity is a hybrid concept that provides a continuity sense and a frame of differentiating self and others to enable one to function autonomously. The establishment of a stable identity is a major development task in teenagers, which calls for more attention. The identity formation challenges go together with normal and temporary identity crisis phenomena in mastering development tasks related to teenagers' age (Matheson et al., 2015). The transformation of psychological and physical experience in adolescents and the discrepancy between the sense of self and others' view of the teenagers result in an identity crisis.

Metacognition is an important factor in determining one’s knowledge and ability to understand, manipulate, and control their cognitive process. It involves knowing where and when to apply a particular strategy for learning and problem-solving. Adult Education and Literacy (2020) describes metacognition as having the ability to apply prior knowledge in coming up with a strategic approach to a learning task, taking the necessary approaches to problem-solving, result evaluation, and reflection, as well as modify an individual’s approach necessarily. Cognitive strategies are the primary mental abilities individuals use to study, think, and learn (Risko & Gilbert, 2016). It helps one achieve a specific objective. However, metacognitive strategies are useful in ensuring that an overarching learning objective is reached.

The main outcomes in the study will be a measure of the strength of the sense of self. That is, having a weak or strong sense of self. The teenager’s problems encountered during their childhood influences their sense of self. Other outcomes include access to social support, level of stress, and the health issues facing these teenagers. Özdemir et al. (2016) pointed out the various changes in an individual’s development that may affect one’s perspective of life. Knowing the particular changes taking place in teenagers and the right approach given to them provides a better way of shaping them (Blakelock et al., 2016). The study result will help teenagers who have undergone childhood mental and emotional challenges manage their identity crisis. They will be able to identify and overcome the various causes of an identity crisis . The study will also identify the roles metacognitive ability play to help manage identity crises among these teenagers.
