Psychological Concept

One key psychological concept that has been studied over time is free will and determinism. The concept is concerned with the extent to which people have control over their actions (King, Woody, & Viney, 2015). Usually, there are tendencies to believe that we have freedom over the choices we make; however, we might have less control over our behaviors thus the need for further research. Free will and determinism can be studied using primary sources to best understand the concepts well.

Primary sources needed

The main primary sources that can be used to study free will and determinism are books and journal articles reporting research findings from the concept. There are different books that have published the concepts of free will, for instance, the 2012 book “free will” that was authored by Sam Harris. Articles documenting experiments on free will and determinism have been extensively studied using different approaches which include neurophilosophy, experimental psychology, genetics, and theology among others. The books and articles are important as they provide first-hand evidence about free will and determinism. The journal articles are important as they provide empirical evidence. Books and articles are thus important as they provide a platform where individuals can collect a wide variety of information that can be used to understand free will and determinism.

Rigorous research

Primary sources provide a platform for researchers to read the documents, take notes, and organize them. However, rigorous research is more than the taking and organizing of notes. Researchers are required to interpret the notes made to avoid making historical narratives instead of a historical research study. The interpretation of the notes collected is the only way that researcher will attach meaning to the data and thus useful to the readers (Yanow & Schwartz-Shea, 2015). Importantly, there is a need to understand that meaning can be derived from aspects other than written components. To make an accurate interpretation of free will and determinism, a researcher would, for instance, need to interview prominent psychologists or review notes and videotapes.
