Discuss the role that rape myths play in sexual assault?

Rape myths acceptance contributes significantly to the continued sexual assault perpetuation by justifying it after its occurrence and by increasing the potential for future assault. They also facilitate tolerance toward sexual assault by creating a general distrust climate and negative assessment of victims of rape in which blame attributions are directed towards the victims when judgments are being made regarding specific sexual assault cases (Psychology of Sexual Assault, n.d., p.313).

Discuss the reasons alcohol and drugs are often associated with sexual assault.

The reason that alcohol and drugs are related to sexual assault is that they contribute to the occurrence of sexual assault cases. For example, in most assault cases that entail dating partners, either one or both partners had consumed alcohol before the assault (Psychology of Sexual Assault, n.d., p.308). Besides, a majority of young men may perceive women who use drugs or consume alcohol to be sexually available and are more likely to assault them (Psychology of Sexual Assault, n.d., p.308).

Identify the demographic features of men who rape.

The demographics of men who rape includes about 50 percent of them are under 25 years of age while about 16 percent are under 18 years of age. A majority of convicted rapists demonstrate different antisocial behaviors during their early life experiences. Rapists also demonstrate a deficiency in intimacy and social skills and they are described as lonely (Psychology of Sexual Assault, n.d., p.309).

Describe the different factors that influence the recidivism rate of sex offenders. How may policy changes affect this rate?

The recidivism rate for sex offenders is affected by age in which 18 years and 25 years is the high-risk age at which a majority of adult rapists recidivate. 25 years and 35 years is the high-risk time for extrafamilial child molesters to recidivate. Extrafamilial child molesters have a high possibility recidivating than either rapists or intrafamilial child molesters. 18 years and 25 years is the high-risk period for intrafamilial child molesters to recidivate (Psychology of Sexual Assault, n.d., p.334). Policy changes may influence this rate by encouraging risk evaluations of offenders to identify offenders at the high-risk age, which would help the police monitor offenders by requiring them to regularly register with the police and by informing the community where high-risk offenders live.
